We've been much better at getting out there and getting the attention of players from a wider field. Pardew would never have attempted to sign anyone from Olympiakos. Prolly never f****** heard of Olympiakos. Sam made the point that they'd had a whole lot of players in the frame but it was always going to be tough selling a relegation fight to a player who aspires to the higher echelons of the Premier League.

Compare where we are now to where Sunderland ended up:

"It has been well documented we were after some players but clubs have said no or the players have decided they do not want to come. It was not for the want of trying." (Moyes)

And Leicester City:

"Well that was a damp squib of a transfer deadline day. We are stuck with a player who said he would never play for us again (Ulloa) and we sign Molla Wague, a centre-back who has played just six league games this season.
It's like putting a plaster over a severed leg. What's more worrying is the signings and improved form of our relegation rivals." (Chris Forryan from their fanzine)

We stole a march on those two today, and not just by winning whilst they dropped points.

Only Mutch on the way out. Come summer, he'll be followed by Campbell, Kelly, Fryers, Lee and Hennessy.

Dead wood removed and replaced with improvements.

Rumour has it we got a 25m loan fee for Mutch...and they are covering his wages

Credit where it is due. Parish has gone a long way to repairing the damage he did with not sacking AP sooner. He has backed the manager, it always somehow seems a bit schoolboy with Parish and we were linked with so many players I was surprised to not see Lombardo getting some column inches in the mirror. I think overall we have dont very well with the transfers. Getting Sakho in should be good, he is a bit of a donkey but he plays for France ffs. Patrick Van made some errors today but I think will compete well with Schlupp for the wing back spot. Would have liked to see someone signed to replace Joel Ward as right wing back, assuming we play that system a fair bit against the teams around us...This Serbian bloke looks good but who is going to make way, honestly I would drop Cabaye before Jimmy Mac. Is this the game where Andros Townsend turns the corner aswell? Suddenly things are looking up. Kone is a great addition too as it means Campbell should never get near the pitch again.

Good analysis, it feels like we now have a squad rather than a first team. Hopefully Campbell, Fryers and Kelly will be, at best back up and Townsend, Cabaye, Puncheon etc now have real competition for places.

Appalling cockup. Why didn't we have a scout in that supermarket car park? Disgusted.

Don't forget Middlesborough, did you see the Karanka press conference? He seemed to be gutted with their signings. Bamford, Gestede and Gueidiora!!

You may be right Rudi, but my bet is Wilf goes really soon in the summer to balance the books.

If I were SA I would be tempted to keep Townsend as Wilf' replacement because he's a far better player than he's shown to date and -- the way values are -- the player he could be would cost a bomb to acquire.

Agree with this - I'm hoping that he can show us the player that he was for Newcastle in the run in and convince us to keep him. Cant help but feel there is quality there

Cannot complain ... SP put his hand in the Eagles coffer's ... pulled out a wad for Sam to get some new faces in to liven up the team.
It was needed and now we will kick on and get up that table ... really looking forward to the new lads play .. and get stuck in.
Lovely jubly

Big difference between Sam and Alan. Sam has consistently reflected what many on here have been saying for yonks what we needed: LB, CM, DM, etc. Great to see a match played too where curious subs are not happening. Sam is miles better than Alan. We started the season sh1te without the players we needed (ie Jedi's replacement) because of that moron. A great manager at last and a great window. COYP!

Now that all the business is done, I'm very happy indeed. We do have a big weakness on the right side - Ward isn't the best, and if we persist with wing-backs he's really going to have to up his performances. And no real effective back-up; Kelly could do a job as a defensive full-back once or twice but as a wing-back?

But we finally have a left-back, and even a left-footed winger who can also drop in at full- or wing-back. We needed another centre-back, especially if we're going with 3 every week, and Sakho is a class addition. Milivojevic I'm really excited about.

We've spent a lot now and it's going to be important to shift a lot of the squad players out quickly in the summer to stay financially competitive (Campbell, Lee, Mutch, Fryers, Sako). But now I'm really confident we have a squad that can stay up, and we have real options.
