Its not often I agree with your views, but you are spot on here.

Some of the posts are unbelievable, what do people want. We produced a back to basics solid performance against a good Saints side, most people expected us to lose. It seems people just don't want to give credit.

If that performance was say, under a different manager, everyone would be praising him.

No we didn't. We were gifted two goals by an absolutely dire Southampton. Let's not dress it up any other way. If Southampton had turned up yesterday we would have rolled over. That win was down to luck not a back to basics solid performance.

No 'gifted' goals at all.

1st goal was a credit to Benteke who was always pressurising the goal keeper where most players wouldn't have bothered.

2nd goal was a supeb flick on by Ledley and Tomkins eagerness to be in the box, a great goal.

3rd goal was down to the persistence of Puncheon to keep the ball in play rather than let it go out for a goal kick and Benteke to be right where he should be for a top striker.

They were gifts but typically we're the team giving the opposition goals so it was a solid performance- especially at sit pieces. I missed the game as I'm away in Canada attending family business it watch with a cousin who was appalled by how direct we were until we got those goals. Thing is we were effective.

If anyone seriously considers yesterday the worst performance of the season - then you haven't seen that many matches. As for being lucky - they say you make your own luck and we did that yesterday.(by keeping harassing Forster)
Lets hope we perform equally badly at Hull.

Worst performance? Do you mean not playing the possession/patient football we're so good at.
What do you call a good performance?
For me it's everyone giving 100%, playing to our strengths. Keeping possession at the end of the game to see it out.
I think for the first time ever I actually cheered every time delaney 'hoofed it'. Get the ball away from our box as far as possible.
This win was massive and considering the pressure the players must have been under was a fantastic performance.

Blimey, what game were you watching? Good result though massively flattering. The performance was anything but fantastic though.

Not often I agree with you!!! Southampton were poor but if we'd been them and lost that 3-0 I'd have been fuming. For once we had the luck. Doesn't change my opinion of AP and hopefully the owners will take exception to his comments about them.

Most importantly we got the win
And sometimes it doesn't matter how you get them
But yesterday we were really not good at all
If it hadnt been for a 2 minute spell where Southampton became suicidal and gave us 2 goals we would at best got a draw
We were very ordinary
And Southampton looked like they had played a game too many lately
On the plus side
Zaha and McArthur were very good
Hull next week , another 3 points and the divison looks a safer place again

You say that, but in the first case, had Beneteke not been putting pressure on the keeper, he would probably not have made the mistake (clearing quickly, rather than taking a touch). For the second, Ledley's touch is essential in creating that goal, even if they failed to clear it, as the deflection helps to creates the confusion. Of course Tompkins also had to work that position, to get the goal.

As for the third goal, that was just excellent play by Puncheon, twice.

The goals were 'gifts' but don't for a moment think that our players weren't involved.

You could just as easily point to the goals at Swansea and against Man City, as being of our own makings. Most goals come from defensive errors (except the peaches). You put pressure on the defence to create those goals.

Yeah we wasn't very good but 3 goals and a clean sheet when we've been on a run like we have will do the confidence wonders, no matter how it's happened. My concern is how deep we defend and the unreal amount of crosses we let in.Southampton were terrible yesterday but who cares.

More importantly, we weren't creating gift chances for them, in the way we did against City and Swansea. Southampton weren't 'at their best' but they weren't s**t either. If you get a clean sheet, its because the defence did their job. Even when its 'last man' defending, or a good save.

But we played much more coherently and cohesively than we did in the previous two games.

3-0 against a superior team, is a good result. We played in a more safety orientated manner, and it paid off for us.

For me, this thread sums up football fans everywhere.

All season we have been bemoaning AP's tactical naivety...
playing gung ho football and losing by the odd goal in 9 etc.
pleading for him to be more measured and spend time organising the defence
it is results that matter, not playing attractive football losing 2-1 to City
and so on.

Yesterday there was clear evidence of it...yes, a lot less fluid going forward but everything we asked for in order to stop the rot, get a win and a clean sheet, looked far more balanced in terms of mentality.

The reaction...complain that we played badly.

You have to love footy fans :-)

Im not complaining
Im fully aware that Palace are a mid table team at best
Im just stating a fact , that it was our worst performance of the season .
