I wear a poppy all year round in respect for my Grandad who was gassed on the Somme and also for the thousands of other poor b******s who were led into slaughter.

I don't generally wear a poppy, due to the kind of politicisation that's been seen, and in respect to my granddads hatred of politicians co-opting Rememberance Sunday as a photo op.

But I do have a standing order with the British Legion.

Fifa wrong!

They saw no objection to it in 2011, and as the Dutch commemorate their fallen with a national holiday in May, they have on previous occasions been permitted to change match dates when they coincided.

Swastikas, in the sense you mean, are a political statement, therefor would, quite correctly, not be permitted.

Black armbands have been regularly worn by all players and officials in international matches to mark the death of someone notable.

Just be grateful that you have the freedom that the fallen bought for this country with their lives, to ignore poppy sellers if that is your wish. Your life would have been rather more restricted without their sacrifice.

Sadly you are wasting your time trying to educate this fella Becks.

He seems to hate Britain and all it's traditions.

The sort of fella that gets enraged about Trump verbally abusing women but then defends Muslims who have misogyny in their DNA.

The poppy is a political symbol though right?

Even more so now than ever with people kicking up this much fuss about it.

England played on Armistice day a decade ago with no poppy to be seen. Bizarre recent crusade with such a fuss about it being on a shirt. Have a nice military parade and a minute's silence before kick off and be as dignified as possible without this boring arguing over it.

Is it balls Dan.

You are in your 30's right?

I knew what the Poppy represented when I was 5 years old and it aint political or religious.

If people want to support their right to wear a poppy then it is no one else's business.

All this bollocks about the Poppy police annoys me too - no one is forced to wear a poppy or donate to the cause.

Surely the poppy has no national or political boundaries. It is a symbol of remembrance for all who have died in war. Now I could be a cynic and start talking about who started the various wars or about some soldiers who went about killing innocent civilians, men women and children but that would rather be a side issue. War makes mean people a lot meaner and turns the peaceful into killers.
I must admit that I don't have quite the same sympathy for professionals as I do conscripts but they do serve the country in ways that most would run away from. Sadly, in most wars the poor soldier is just a pawn in a game of chess using real people and played by the power hungry elite. If I want to wear a poppy then no one is going to stop me but if you wear it as a symbol of nationalism then you have seriously missed the point.

My grandad got blown up at Vimy Ridge, they patched him up and sent him back to war. Afterwards he said it was an awful waste and deeply resented having been sent to war and losing the use of his leg.

My father got shrapnel wounds at Monte Casino.

It was important to them to remember lost comrades. And they respected the 'enemy's' right to do the same.

To me this is not political, it is remembrance without critique. Decrying the concept is like saying you can't do anything special for the Day of the Dead in Mexico.

It's what we do, it isn't advertising, it isn't political and it's important.
