I remember him scoring a bullet header from the edge of the box from a corner.
I have an idea we lost that game against Chelsea.
Sometime in the late 1960's

Funny you should mention that, I remember it too. I can't remember who it was against but, if it was indeed Chelsea, then it was on 7th February 1970 in the FA Cup, a game we lost 1-4. The one I'm remembering was at the. Holmesale end.

All good mentioned here (especially Bright), but seriously, if it's down to winning balls in the air (not scoring!), then Micky Droy was in a class of hIs own!

I recall standing in the Arthur Waite enclosure and watching him heading back the opposition keepers' goal kicks by simply standing flat-footed, never even needing to jump, (due to hIs size), and letting out a huge grunt as he headed the ball!

It was freaky, and hilarious to watch, bringing laughs from those lucky enough to witness it!

Might just have been the age i was at the time but Jim Cannon seem to win every header he went for too. Worst has to be Richard Shaw, He ducked out of quite a few in his time.

Yes he is great in the air. Mark Bright was also great in the air. Eric the Ninja was great but its hard to compare a center back with center forward.
Question i ask in regards to headers, Why does a Centre Back win most headers when defending but not when attacking?

unless your name is scott dann

my user name is in honour of one of his many own goals , but I would say he probably bottled out of headers as he didn't want to mess up his luxuriously gheri curled barnet .

For me a bullet header is unstoppable like the Benteke goal against Sunderland or the Ian Walsh one posted above or any Scott Dann goal, but what I like about the Ben goal against Everton is the clever placement. As soon as I read this thread I remembered the Neil Shipperley goal against Sunderland in the playoffs. Almost looping the ball away from goal in order to curl in around the keeper. Now that is skill. That's what we saw against Everton.

No footage, but Hopkins describes it well:

As a boy growing up on the Holmesdale I remember Ian Evans winning everything in the air, absolutely peerless, albeit we were playing in the old 3rd division against a seemingly endless succession of big northern brutes who just wanted to kick my heroes.

Hey - I really liked Richard Shaw. I saw him as the speedy centre back in the "You'll never beat Des Walker" mode. He was a successfully converted midfielder (as was Gareth Southgate). For his size he did pretty well in the air.
