One more quality attacking midfielder and two quality full backs and the jigsaw should finally be complete. To be fair, the entire back four from that late seventies team was mustard. The late eighties/early nineties team had the attacking line up for sure but did not have a back four to compare with Doris/Gilbert/Cannon and Sansom.

Played a couple of times at CB for us including the disaster against Liverpoool last year. I'm not sold on him as a CB. I think he is a handy back up full back though. Still think we need to upgrade both First choice full backs. And have done for a while. I wish Souare well, I was looking forward to seeing Benteke getting on the end of one of those wicked curling crosses. Was hardly a disaster in the Liverpool game , bar a poor pass which we were admittedly punished for he played well , also his pass was poor , but it also highlighted how slow and immobile Dann can be at times. Very happy with Kelly, but of course will miss Souares darting runs and wicked crosses. But Martin K. deserves to play - not so sure about Ward on the right. Need to upgrade here at least next summer. But having said that - u can find few more dedicated and honest professionals than Ward & Kelly. Hope it work out real great for both. With Zaha & Andros on the wings we need defenders who can defend, not run up and down like maniacs (Rose and Walker for Spurs to mention 2).

If he is getting up to scratch, and I do have no idea if he is because he has played so little, Fryers would be a nice option purely because I don't think we now have a left footed player in the side? Having said that, I do rate Martin Kelly and whether Kelly should be the RB over Ward is a different question. Without Pape's unfortunate incident, I think Ward may have been under some serious pressure over the next few games. Option to play Ward at LB and Kelly at RB?
Ward at left back isnt the answer, think in some games he looks pretty wobbily on the right to be fair, give Kelly a shot but its a much weaker back four with Joel on the left. He'll get twisted up

never thought I'd see the day ward was spoken about being upgraded on. took it that he is the best we could possibly have that wouldn't automatically be chased by the top 4. and that's about right isn't it?

Are you joking? Wars has been our weakest link for about 18 months. He is so average. Squad player who tries so hard but is caught out constantly. Has some footballing ability but zero defensive know how. Always diving in and overcommitting. I love the guy but we need an upgrade and have for a while.

I think these days he gets beaten a little too easily on his flank and he doesn't have Souare's pace or attacking ability to make up for it

Nice we actually have a very adequate back-up for an injury for once.

Regards Kelly, central defence is his preferred position but whilst he can play anywhere across the back four there is a 'School of thought' that he is really a right-back. Before the 'Window' shut I was calling (Not on HOL !) for the club to sign Leicester's Ben Chilwell - he would have been useful now that Souare is out.

You wanted us to sign a player who signed a new 5 year contract with the champions Leicester and who Liverpool tried to sign for £7m in the summer as a backup for Souare? Anyway - Kelly is a good solid defender who provides good cover across the back 4. And I think he should have been in the team ahead of Ward at the moment. But in the formation Pardew wants us to play, support for attacking full backs would seem to be pretty important. And Souare is much better at that side of things than Ward or Kelly. So he is a big loss.
