I was so little the turnstile operator allowed my sister to lift me over the turnstile. In 1964 my brother-in-law, John Henty, first played Glad all Over and everyone around the front row banged the old advertising hoardings. It was immediately adopted as a Palace favourite and despite other clubs trying to hijack it (God - can't they come up with their own anthem?)we were the original and still current users. When the Arthur Wait stand was being built I went up there in the summer for a look and ended up holding a piece of shuttering in place with Bert Head at the other end whilst they poured the concrete. Those were the good old days and these are the good old days again for the current generation. The ground atmosphere and phenomenal sound produced by the Holmesdale today are better though than anything of have ever experienced at the ground including the 51K at the Burnley play off match. Keep it up lads and lasses, you are brilliant. My sister went to Lady Edridge too. They used to climb the fence to look at the footballers. T'was a dump though. I could be wrong but I thought bit and pieces was the first tune we banged the hoardings to - or rather stamped our feet on the wooden main stand floor in my case - but we then found glad all over worked better.

They used to play The LIquidator too, which people used to stamp along to (This now seems to have been colonised by Chelsea fans, but I think they played it at every ground) Of course, before I was re-incarnated in 1960, I remember from a previous life when Selhurst was just a clearing in the wood. (That's what the name Sel-hurst means in Anglo Saxon) As the players came out on the itch the druids used to chant.... oh, but that's another story

Oh hang on, you're going to say I made this up. Ask Bert Head. He was there... I remember Chatterton's dad Len driving a VW Beetle with big rollers on the front and back called "The Flatterer" in the 70's. That was bizarre enough and actually happened!

Oh I assure you it's true.. and I never wrote that it was '50 blokes' - roughly 1/4 were women/wives. ..and 'Monkey' Willard with his bucket and magic sponge.. ..and 'Handbag', aka '50 pence piece head'. Anyone remember him?

I used to love standing on the steps of the Croydon Hospital hut at the top of the bank right on halfway. Had to be careful not to get knocked off when they opened the door.

I'm a bit trollied now, so forgive me But does anyone remember when Gerry Queen (our scottish number nine) used to go to the same mass as us in..... what was that church in Thornton heath, St Andrews? Can you imagine that happening today? Although, hang on, Richard Shaw used to play pool in a pub in Gloucester road. i'm too drunk to remember the pub's name now, and that was my own area. I used to drink in the Selhurst Arms, which was at the end of my road, but now when I go back it's a Co-op shop Mind you, in my previous life, i didn't mind that as I was a Roman General, who built Purley Way, and I made sure that all the showers on the football pitches were extra cold, to keep discipline among the sunday footballers er....

I remember buying monkey nuts in a paper bag and throwing the shells on the gravel path around the pitch. One time I hit a copper on the head by accident and he lifted me out of the stand (probably about 8/9) and made me stay in the police hut for the whole game. Was bricking it as I had a penknife in my pocket as a friend had returned it to me before the game as I had lent it to them but the copper didn't search me luckily.
