Then Wilf probably would have been dropped to the bench and Punch played out wide which is not his best position anymore, he is better in the Number 10 role, even though he is not playing as well as he did two years ago. The injury to Remy means we will likely see Flamini playing with Jimmy Mac or Cabaye in the middle, or we have the option of moving Cabaye into the number 10 role and playing Jimmy Mac and Flamini behind. Joe Ledley of course could sit behind as well. All this would mean Wilf and Townsend can push up wide and frighten defences. To be honest i was more pleased we got Flamini. That was desperately needed I'd actually agree to a certain point. I don't think we're ready to switch to an out and out front 2 and it did sound from AP comments as though prior to his injury he was looking to play both Remy and Ben. So for this game I'm a little pleased we won't be. Personally want to see Punch and Lee in the middle both causing havoc behind Ben. As someone else mentioned I think Lee is going to have a great year for us and after his good form it would have been disappointing to see Remy possibly push him out the team. Although obviously I don't actually want one of our squad to be injured for 2 months. But I get the OP main point and kinda agree. Maybe we can play 2 up top but I don't think we're ready for that yet..

I was never totally ' sold ' on Gayle, but I also think he was never utilised properly. He certainly has a goalscorers instincts and I agree, a partnership in a front 2 may have seen him thrive.

The guy can't play this role anymore - he wants to drop deep, often leaving Jimmy Mac to try and support the strikers, which is not his best position. we tried it again in the cup final and he was the worst player on the pitch. Cabeye on paper was a great signing but other than a few nice touches he's not doing enough for me. Not saying I wouldn't play him, just not as a No10 By this are you saying that in your opinion he physically can't play this role anymore because if so have his legs gone or a long term injury. Wasn't there reports last season of him having a possible pelvic problem? At Newcastle he would be a box to box player scoring many goals from outside the box and I assume this is why he was bought but he is a shadow of this. All in all rather an odd situation.

There was a great frisson of excitement when we signed Cabaye who was our "Stellar" player etc etc.He has certainly not lived up to expectations and is not the player he was at Newcastle.Would there have been a huge outcry if he had been sold in the 'Transfer Window' ????

Benteke, Townsend hopefully will. Remy being injured isn't a good thing. Gutted for him and us. I hope you watched the Middlesbrough match because it totally was about what I posted. Benteke scored, and Zaha scored a top class goal and Townsend almost scored a superb strike but for a great save. You want to rewind and change that to 442 with Remy next to Benteke??? They played much better than last week's first 45 minutes - in control - totally deserved win. JUST AS I POSTED.

I haven't even read it through to the end yet. But I'm shocked someone can say that a player getting an 8 week injury is a "blessing". And a player whose signing received widespread acclaim I thought.

IMO the last 12 months is irrelevant. We've a new squad with new capabilities. We can't judge goal scoring expectations on historical performance stats. We've moved on. Sadly one of our new signings to strengthen our squad will be sidelined for 8 weeks. This is not a blessing in any sense. It's bad news for the club and terribly sad for a player who was relishing an opportunity to refresh his career.

Agree that they can all have a clean slate, but all players are judged on past performance, otherwise Campbell would be worth the same as Messi. On what basis do you think we signed our new players?

It's a very good question, Willo. I'm hoping he might be the CAM we're seeking. With Flamini we've strengthened the DM department and I hope this might release Cabaye to do great creative things in the top third. Whilst I'm hoping for this, I must admit that I'm not too confident it will work. The trouble is that Cabaye does not have much of a resale value so I think we've got to give it a try and hope for the best. I still think we will be looking for a CAM in the January transfer window - maybe to supplement him rather than replace him.
