I remember him well too. I think there was a match when he scored a very quick hat-trick and after the third the ref was shaking his head in disbelief. At least, that was how it seemed to me. Anyone else got a similar memory?
I was gutted when he went off to West Ham and a little puzzled that he finished his career in South Africa. This was apartheid South Africa after all - but I just assumed that footballers, even heroes, had no consciences or political awareness.

Stanley Matthews played in south Africa at that time as well but you should remember that football was (and is) played more by blacks than whites (who prefer rugby) so Johnny and Stan would have been welcome by the black population.

Incidentally, I think I am right in saying that Johnny Byrne was the first, if not the only, Fourth Division player to play for England. Imagine a Div 2 player getting in now.

I think Johnny scored three or four in Palace's biggest ever win, 9 - 0 against Barrow in the fourth Division. I was there and it was pissing down.

Or perhaps Johnny mcnichol was the skipper rather than petchey - can't remember.

Can anyone remind me the price of children's admission - and the cost of a prog?

Have vague memories on buying palace tack from a shed, but I don't think there was a club shop where you could buy team strips etc.

Did we even have an away strip in the 50s and 60s?

While we on the subject can anyone help me with this signed picture of the great man himself, I acquired the book about ten years ago, there is no other signed pictures in the book and I have seen other signatures that do not resemble this one but bearing in mind this could be one of his early signature's it could differ,

Definitely Johnny's bandy knees as I remember. I lived in Whitworth Road when Johnny lodged in Wrights Road. He was such a nice guy, often stopping to chat with my Dad on days that he passed by. I think he probably replaced my earlier Palace hero, Mike Deakin.
I'll never forget the Real Madrid game when he dragged the ball back from a Real player, cheekily beckoning him on, taunting him to try to steal the ball. Magical days of FIVE forwards, with the three inside men constantly switching positions.

With age memory goes,west-east whatever, but it goes.

For the life of me I cannot remember the price of a program, but it couldn't have been more then penny's
because back then, having only my poor ole Mum to give me pocket money, things were bloody tight, I can tell you. So with the bus fare from Streatham, getting in for the game, plus buying a program, left nothing for anything else..No fish and chips for me..and I LOVE fish and chips, wrapped up in newspaper !!

Mum always made sure I went, as she knew the Palace was my be all, and end all.
I used to keep ALL the programs, but over the years, moving etc, they all got lost...not to happy about that now, as I would dearly love to look back over them, and who knows bring back some memory's perhaps..

Thanks for that.....You have got to believe this..but that is ONE match I truly remember, because when Mum and I moved from Streatham, we lived between Bedford and Northampton..and I always thought how weird that we should be near Northampton as we played them those few years before....
How strange life is sometimes.. Thanks again for that memory..although they did beat us 0-1..hated them for that !

When we resigned Byrne I reckon that his first game was away at Northampton, loads of Palace went and not unaturally we bloody lost!!

The Messiah thing did not work that day.

I hero worshipped Johnny but in truth his career fizzled out at a relatively young age.

I have supported Palace since the WW2 and without question he was a truly great player, highly skilled --in his hey day I remember a manager stating "put Byrne over the touchline before he starts taking the piss"

he is sadly no longer with us but I suspect that he suffered the same problems (perhaps life shortening) that afflicts our other truly exceptional home grown superstar--Kenny Sansom.

The south Africa link probably came about as a result of his friendship with Johnny Haynes-England captain and first £100 pw player, the greatest passer of a football.Who also went out there.
