Strong yes from me. Fine, he had a poor season a year ago. Did anyone at Newcastle not have a poor season? Back under Pardew, alongside Scott Dann, in a team heading in the direction we are going this could be a superb signing. Form is temporary, class is permanent and he has class. At 33 he could give us 2/3 quality years providing time for us to identify a long-term, younger CH solution in the interim. If there is any truth to this rumour, get him in. I would be very excited.
Sydenham by birth. Selhurst by the Grace of God. |

I agree with Syd's comments: class is permanent. It probably also means that Palace are preparing to 'spend big' on a new striker ( personally I hope it isn't Ramos), and cant also afford to spend big on a new CB?

I would rather go for someone younger. It would leave us with all of Danns partners 33 or older. I would rather switch Kelly.

I would rather take a punt on someone younger in the championship. Tommy Smith (Ipswich) or Grant Hanley (Blackburn). But would rather us went for someone like John Brooks (USA plays in Germany)

One explanation may be we think that Innis or another youth player will be good enough so that we need a stop gap.Coloccini is/was class but his age is against him. Pardew knows him from Newcastle and must feel he will add something both on and possibly more importantly off the pitch

Beyond age I think we need a CB who is comfortable on the ball and willing to bring it out of defence and supply the midfield and wingers to set up attacks, rather than a long ball option. The latter invariably concedes possession and puts us on the backfoot. More measured composure from the back, even if this means at times slowing down the game if need be, as we not only have great pace but trickery as well.

He's a good centre back and brings experience but we have that with Brede and DD.... I get why Pards would want him as they have a great rapport but I feel a younger option is better for the team at this stage of progression. Dann is 1st choice, understandably, so the rumours around Chester and even Caulker (For similar money) would be the way I would go. Maybe the budget doesnt stretch to 12m+ for a striker and 8m+ for a centreback, which is the price touted for Caulker and Chester,so Coloccini is a better option if AP going all out for the striker he needs.

Great summary. Newcastle seem open to Coloccini moving on. I didn't realise what a good passer of the ball he is, so I guess that would add something to the squad...

No thanks.he was clearly on the downgrade and we clearly don't need another approaching mid 30s centre half. I wouldn't touch anyone from Newcastle. They clearly had no team spirit last year and that is still our main strength

SKY SPORTS: "Newcastle manager Steve McClaren has told Sky Sports that Crystal Palace have not made a formal approach for captain Fabricio Coloccini. Some reports claimed the Magpies centre back is wanted by his former manager Alan Pardew, but McClaren expects the Argentine to stay at St James' Park this summer..."
