Moved out in 2013, the jury's still out, but I think it's essentially a people question for me.

Family and friends are mostly in London, so I'm moving back as soon as work permits.

Quite the mini-Palace population in this fine city. it took some getting used to, but with easy access to the surrounding countryside and the West it offers everything.

The schools are rubbish... unless you buy in the Redland/Westbury Park area where they are generally of high standard [because of middle class parents].

Commerce is strong, culture is cool with a big student population and the vibe is good. The Sunday Times reckons this is the place to be.

Also, to London in only 1.45 minutes by train [to be reduced in a few years with high speed], 2 1/2 hours by cheap bus or pretty speedy by car.

Join the gang.

PS Edinburgh is gorgeous. My mum lives there. It has everything save good weather.

Living in London would drastically reduce these travelling times.

Still debating. Heart wants to stay in London though. My girls are settled at school/nursery and I earn a decent wage.

But the fact I could bugger off to Edinburgh and have a spacious flat in a very nice area and still be virtually mortgage free due to the ludicrous increase in London property prices over the last few years is a definite positive.

My parents are there so free regular childcare and I can walk to work (or at worst have a half hour bus/tram ride) wherever I am going would definitely also be a plus.

Think we'd keep the house here and rent for a while to see whether we liked it if we did make the move. Given I have no more family in London and my missus doesn't have much either, once we go I can't see us coming back much.

Financial services

I would look at Bahamas/Cayman etc.(those sort of financial places)

Met a bloke in Cayman Islands, who was in that game, great for his kids,Mrs and he loved it.Safe, walked the dog on the beach every day,Sun shines all the time, food was fresh from the sea...he was a very happy bunny.

No contest were his words.

Never knew YOU were in FS Paul.....

Fingers in all sorts of pies Jamie...but the OP said he is in that game.

I've always thought about Caymans etc. but the missus isn't interested in moving that far away from her family. She thinks London/Edinburgh is far enough. So my idea of sipping a cocktail while overlooking the beach from my office window is out of the .... um ... window.

In reply to the OP.....

Best thing I ever did was leaving London when I did, great to come back & visit, but sooo much nicer to go home after.

Worst thing I did was coming back, tho not by choice, more circumstance beyond my control

This sums it up perfectly for me too, I moved out of croydon nearly 4 yrs ago and ain't looked back.

Admittedly part of me does miss the hustle and bustle and some good mates who are still there and mum who is moving near me soon anyway but I'm a 1.45 minute drive back so it's not too far away.

If I were you I would look at counties outside of the M25.

You could always join the rest of the financial services crowd in Jersey.

30 minutes from Gatwick so it's easy to get to Selhurst. Lots of beaches, no crime (except in financial services), good state education. Loads of money, little tax, no commuting. Loads of pubs, bars and restaurants.

There's also at least three Crystal Palace fan's here.

It's quicker to get to Edinburgh from here too and probably cheaper than the train.

Moved out of Upper Grove in 1981.

In those days, in rural Oxfordshire, you could get in the car and drive around virtually all day in top gear.

34 years later, and I can scarcely get into top gear at all.

And the thought of driving into London... well, fills me with dread.

So my advice would be, do it - just don't go back too often.

I find that living in London you have to scrap for everything, its bloody hard work and tiring.
One thing about this city of ours it certainly keeps you on your toes, some people miss the fight, some don't

Good luck fella .

I live and work in and around London but have a place on the coast. You're right Kev London is a daily fight and people are generally unfriendly. When we stay on the coast the different way of life always surprises me. Friendlier people, less traffic, slower pace but then there are things like the buses don't run after 6pm, there aren't as many facilities and I still drive with London road rage. All in all I would like to leave London one day but not yet.

The ups and downs of Palace have left me older than my years
