If they were going to take the piss with the new proposals, why not get George Galloway involved? Opportunity missed.
Actually that's exactly what debates in politics really are, winning buy echoing popularist nonsense and appealing to camera and crowd. Its as old as philosophy, the gulf between sophistry, oratory and philosophy. Politics isn't about being right, its about being popular and 'giving the people' what they want, or selling them the idea. It doesn't generally involve being right, or accountable for being right. Indeed, politics isn't about being right, its about sounding right.

If that's the case, why are we still in the EU? Why do we not have the death penalty? Obviously politicians have to respond to the popular will, but it is also about doing what's right often in the face of being popular. Imagine a country governed by Twitter and then you'll have something to complain about.

Well the EU employs lots of MPs and MEP's and Quangos and other assorted jollies, that line pockets nicely - Plus I think most MP's are actually scared that leaving the EU would have negative ramifications that they'll be blamed for. Death Penalty - Because not that many people actually seem to want it, and among those who do, they're more in love with the idea than the reality. That s**t will soon come back to bite you politically - plus there is the s**t storm of trying to get the judiciary onside and how to get around European requirements. Its a fiasco in the US. It would be just as bad here, except that the nation is far less moralistically behind the idea of killing people who are invariable poor, mentally impared, mentally ill or otherwise questionably competent. You speak to people who want executions, and they're all about '100% certainity' and 'the worst crimes' - Which is impossible to achieve in reality.

Indeed, it is. What politics really needs, is 'a neutral party' rather than opposition parties, who's role is objectively pursue knowledge, possibly by the Socratic methods, on bills being introduced, without having to be forced to drink hemlock.

You definitely don't get gags like that in the tedious Bundestag semi-circle.

Funniest part of that was it was Emily Maitless who caught him out. She can barely read autocue.
