He was great, particularly from 1990 onwards. He was arguably MoM against Liverpool at Villa Park. He ran endlessly up and down the left side that match. His crossing was great - see Ian Wright's 2nd goal in the FA Cup final. I saw some great goals too. Curlers vs Sunderland and Man Utd spring to mind.

And that long distance effort at Nottm Forest also springs to mind.

John was my favorite player of that era, even more so than Ian Wright. He was fantastically talented and had two awful injuries that set him back at his peek - the first playing for England if I remember correctly. Before one game he gave me my ticket in the ticket office during one of his injury periods, he was a great character. A nice guy and probably a favorite of Mr Coppell in the position he played. He made Ryan Giggs look pedestrian in one game at home to the manure - can't remember the score ended up on that one though.

I seem to remember being at an evening game against Leeds at Selhurst where he was running them ragged producing great crosses but managed to wrap himself around a post and get injured. His crossing was superb, particularly from the deep.

As I said, I do believe there was a question over his stamina, a blood thing, that inhibited his immediate development. I think he actually got injured playing for England, ran into a post trying to score, though it has been said the injury was at Palace. Don't want to start an argument, but what is confusing me?

The really bad one happened at Selhurst v Leeds if I remember right. I was there. Cruciate ligaments in the knee went when he landed awkwardly.

I was at that game too. Had he not been converted to a sort of centre back by coppell at the time? My memory is of him going down after defending a cross..

Thanks Kermit. Maybe I'm thinking of Coppel.

It's my view that had he not done his cruciate, he was on the way to becoming the second best player in Palace history (after Kenny Sansom). He was very, very good indeed and he had room to get even better (though rumour had it that he was soon to be on his way to Liverpool when he went down hurt).

Sydenham by birth. Selhurst by the Grace of God.

A player who was injuried for ages, and when he got back to full fitness he f**ked off with the rest of them when we went down, will never forget him celebrating infront of the holmesdale for Reading when they scored and he had nothing to do with their goal.

Thankfully the first time I saw him play live was against Leeds in 91, never talks well about the club, always prefers to talk about Charlton or Reading, Wilf and Bolasie are better than him.

Sorry, but absolute crap. The guy is Palace through and through - if you ever get the opportunity to spend any time in his company you will soon realise this. When time allows you will find him at Selhurst Park.

Also runs several events each year to raise money for Geoff Thomas' leukemia fund.

A true gentleman.

Wasn't it his first game back from doing his cruciate that he got a hat trick? Can't remember who it was against though.

Remember him being superb on that England tour of Australia. Injury came at a bad time for him and he wasn't quite the same after

The cross for Wright's 2nd at Wembley is up there with Yala"s cross at Brighton in my list of 'favourite right footed crosses from the left wing in really important games'. Put so much into it he ended up with both feet off the ground. Dream delivery. Also scored a peach of a curling header round 'mardy Neville' in the Zenith final. Two of my fave Palace moments. Not many tricks, but nippy winger. A Palace great. Blummy, Hilaire, salad, McGoldrick, Moses, Yala, Wilf...not a bad selection of wide men.

Amy great goals have been mentioned here but I loved his run and finish at Selhurst Vs Man City in the league cup quarter final. Place went nuts!
