I still have a clear mental picture of him calmly shooting that crucial 4th goal past the Wrexham keeper that night in 1977 - for 13 years that game was undisputedly the best I'd ever seen.

RIP Jeff

A player in the Le Tissier mould. Deceptively slow and very skilful. Played for us during what has been, for me so far, around the best of times to be a Palace fan for sheer excitement. 1977. Those three years from FA Cup semi to winning the league in front of 57,000 at Selhurst (51, 801? Fvck that) - 1976-79 - well any player involved then has a special place.

RIP Jeff. You were a good and underrated player.

Amen to that.

RIP Jeff Bourne

Very sad. Just a little overweight when he signed for us but he made such a difference partnering Harkouk (Swindlehurst went on the wing). Such a brilliant match at Wrexham and I remember being kicked as a lot of others were by their police on the way back to the station. I think he played European football with Derby before signing for us.

Enjoying getting up later and not having someone who knows better than me (apart from the missus of course).

That has made me sad.

The signing of Kevin Philips in 2013 reminded me of his signing. Jeff scored vital goals for the club and really made a difference to the promotion push.

I was at the Wrexham game on 11 May 1977, a memorable day.

Thank you Jeff.

Football, like life, isn't about getting what you want or even deserve. It's about appreciating what you have. Crystal Palace.

Met Jeff a few years ago when he ran The Holly Bush in Linton. I went there to get my Palace book signed by him.. a very nice man.

Rothman’s Football Yearbook 1977-78
Eight Great Goals in Season 1976-77
Jeff Bourne was in good company in this publication
Bettega: Italy v England 17.11.76, Brian Little: A.Villa v Everton 13.4.77, Leighton James: Wales v Czechoslovakia 30.3.77, Kevin Keegan: Liverpool v Ipswich 30.4.77 Peter Barnes: Man City v Spurs 7.5.77, Jimmy Greenhoff: Man Utd v Liverpool 21.5.77, Terry McDermott: Liverpool v Borussia Munchengladbach 23.5.77
As has been well-documented…., this is from the text in the Yearbook – P38 with diagram on P44.
“Arguably the most emotive game of the season took place at Wrexham. The home side needed but a single point to gain promotion to Division 2 for the first time in their history. Two goals down, that place seemed assured when Wrexham equalised in a dramatic second half. Yet in the games last breath Harkouk put Palace ahead to create a situation in which Wrexham still needed a point from their last match to go up. Yet there was still time for Jeff Bourne to score the most crucial goal of the game which gave Palace a better goal difference. Wrexham now had to win the final game. It was beyond them and Palace were promoted”

I've just seen this on the Palace website

He had Motor Neurone Disease, which I didn't know till now. My father had that and I've been fundraising for it for the last 10 years or so.

If anyone would like to make a donation to this most noble cause, in attempts to find a cure for the most devastating and awful of all illnesses, please click below.......

Thank you to anyone that does so.
