Football isn't played with stats. Used to infuriate me after we lost a game under Holloway and he'd say, "Well I look at the stats and I have no idea how we've lost the game."

I love Ward but he is not ready to be thrust into a major tournament.

Thats because Holloway doesn't understand statistics either, he was looking at data, not statistics. Statistics are entirely central to how managers like Pulis and Martinez have built teams, devised tactics, selected players and formulated plans.

Statistics won't win you games, but they'll increase your chances of doing so.

As for Ward vs Clyne, personally I think Ward is a better back up choice than Clyne, largely because of the experience he's had this season as a center back, left back, right back and defensive midfielder.

Clyne is a better player. Ward is a more versitile one.

A fair assessment.

As for Palace Players for the World Cup. None of them will play for England whilst they're Palace players, unless Palace someone end up a top 10 team by the next world cup.

Sadly even the very promising prospects at Southampton will likely be disappointed.

Expect the squad that goes to the world cup to be drearily obvious, with a few fringe players who might get 10 minutes making up the numbers.

This is a silly one, but as speroni has resided in England for so long and has never had a full competitive cap for argentina he is eligible for England. He is also eligible for Italy.

If I was looking for a back-up who's sufficiently solid and consistent to be relied upon to do a good defensive job when needed, I'd take Ward. He and Jules both deserve to go but neither will.

Matthew Debuchy - Newcastle
Gonzalo Castro - Bayern

Neither start.

My comment was admittedly a presumption, but it's a pretty good one and here's why.

Debuchy has started the last five internationals for France including Qualifiers and has done very, very well earning high praise for his performances; previously to that he was kept out of the starting lineup traditionally by Sagna, who is a very good full back himself.

Castro is in some kind of international wilderness having abandoned Spain, switched allegiances to Germany. Really not sure of the details of his status, but:

Considering that only 2 of the top 8 best rated full-backs in all of the European leagues this season aren't starting for their respective countries at this present time - namely Ward and Castro, I'd say there's probably something to the variety of statistics collected by WhoScored. Seems like a solid indication of the ability of the player.

As to their validity, perhaps you should offer some consulting services to WhoScored or EA's PPI, to make sure that their data meets your personal standards?

Nail on the head, Jamie.

I believe that Ward would have to be the best rated fullback in all of Europe just to have the opportunity to play second fiddle to Phil Jones were he to be fit, simply because of the club he plays for.

Frankly, I think that's embarrassing.

Worth considering the nationalities of said players though;

Ricardo Rodriguez - Switzerland
Matthew Debuchy - France
Juan Guillermo Cuadrado - Colombia
David Alaba - Bayern - Austria
Layvin Kurzawa - France (uncapped)
Seamus Coleman - Ireland
Gonzalo Castro - Germany

Add Kurzawa to your list of full backs who aren't used by their countries, and it's 3/8. Furthermore, the quality of the international team, and consequential competition for a starting spot, has to be considered, and in the cases of Rodriguez, Cuadrado, Alaba and Coleman, there really isn't much genuine competition for their starting spot. In reality, it's only Debuchy who has beat off any real competition to start for his country.

Of course these type of stats can be an indicator, but to use them as a predominant comparative measure is naive.

I'm not asking their data to meet my personal standards, merely pointing out that statistics of this ilk are often difficult to define.
