I expect nothing, and take nothing for granted! As others have said, the only goal next season is to stay up. Consolidation is so vital; we need to be thoroughly rooted in this league before thinking about anything but safety first. To be relegated next season could be more damaging than this, if not handled properly. I would hope that the smaller jobs can be done this close season (under-soil heating etc), but hopefully in 12 months time we will be enjoying another successful season and then the wheels can start turning on any ambitious projects that need attention (ground, training facilities etc). In terms of the playing staff, I would expect dead wood to be moved on, and a signing window reminiscent of the January just gone; 4/5 solid signings that help add depth to the squad, without breaking the bank. TP has two yeas left does he not? If the board don't offer up a new contract this summer (sensible given the dreaded "second season syndrome", then I'd look at reviewing his contract at Christmas depending on where we are. Make no mistake though, I don't think next season will be anything other than damn hard work, stressful and nail-biting!
3 good quality signings this summer and ditch 7/8 players hopefully not increasing the wage bill to much.

Two cup finals and 4th in the league would do me.

Surviving will make me happy.
It was my dream to play for Palace and to make my debut. I've always played for the club so if I'm playing here, I wouldn't want to be anywhere else. - John Bostock (Nov 2007) |

A lot of people seem to have confused 'expectation' for next season and 'wish' for next season. Surely the general consensus doesn't expect us to finish 10th/11th? We had a fantastic little run, but we should remember that following the game at Newcastle, many thought we'd had it. Wish for next season is as many have said, finish in the 12th/13th region and not really have to worry about going down, while improving the squad, shipping the dead wood and investing in infrastructure. Expectation for next season is the above, except we'll still be looking over our shoulder well into March and maybe even the first couple of weeks of April and will hopefully secure safety with a few games to go. Survival would be great.

In the league, one place better than wherever we finish this season. In general, though, a season in which we hold our own. In the cups, I would like a run in at least one of them. By "run" I mean at least quarter finals with anything better a bonus.

Despite the fact we could still finish 9th or something this season (yeah, I didn't even bother to check) I actually think it'd be progress if we finished anywhere from 16th upwards if we didn't seem like relegation candidates for as much of the season as we have this season. I know that doesn't make a lot of sense, but I'd be happy with us having a similar season to Swansea/Stoke/Villa this year (in terms of results), e.g.: although mid-low in the table, never REALLY looking like going down. Obviously, with some improvements to the squad/tying down the contracts of our better players. Of course, I'd take a better season than that if it's on offer! A realistic assessment I think. Like this season we will always be looking over our shoulder and will be more interested in what is going on in the bottom 10 than in the top 10.. That is the way it is - two leagues really.

Obviously being Palace we will come either 7th or 20th. Very true - will either be possible Europa Cup or Championship ! ( but hopefully neither)

Survival, slightly more comfortable than this year, marginally improved squad and the infrastructure improved.

I expect us to finish anywhere from 9th to 14th. however, I also expect us to gain points regularly rather than giving the other 19 teams a ten game start on us. Thirty points by early January would be especially nice and give us a chance of a good run in the FA Cup - draw permitting. I would also expect us to play the way we did when we won our five on the spin. togetherness, hard to breakdown and decisive on the counter. My WISH would be for us to score twice as many goals as we have scored this season.

We are clearly better (or certainly no worse) than anyone in the bottom half of the Prem this year and, on more recent form, a couple in the top half too (I'm thinking Stoke and Southampton). Add someone who can put the ball in the net, and a left back (moving Ward back to the right) and I don't see any reason why we should not expect to finish 9th or higher. Don't forget, for the first time in the Prem, we're not newbies. There are three teams coming up and history tells us (painfully) that these will be the prime candidates to drop at the end of the season. I don't see any of the teams below or just above us making huge strides (such as adding a gazillionaire benefactor) and many will remain in turmoil. It's still going to be a scrap - as it should - but I see a full season of Pulis leading an improved squad should be no worse than how this year ended. We wasted 10 games to start the current season, and we won't do that again!
We don't do possession; we do defense and attack. Everything else is just wa**ing with a football. |

I'd like to think we could finish 9th or 10th maybe but to be honest if we replicate this season, safe with 3 games to go I'll be happy.
Stay out the way of the Southern thing. |
