By awarding the penalty initially clearly showed that he just guessed it. He should have consulted the lino first rather than looking like a fool afterwards.

He didnt look the fool at all...he did what he was supposed to in those situations and listen to his assistant who was in a better position. Not many would change their decisions. He doesnt get enough credit as far as i'm concerned...we have so many blinkered fans at times.

To be honest usually he doesn't deserve credit cos he always bottles the big decisions, but he did well yesterday.

If he did it correctly he should never have pointed to the spot before consulting his lino. Either way, I don't really rate him, apart from his presence on the pitch he is pretty inconsistent.

Over the past 2 seasons I think Michael Oliver is by far and away the best ref we have to offer and is only 29.

After giving the penalty and then retracting it, he continued play by letting Guzan take a goalkick. What's that all about?

Some might argue that this was an example of officials working as a team to make the right decision.

They might, I have no issue with the decision as it was correct. I have issue with a ref blatantly giving a decision he couldn't and then being corrected by his lino to save embarrassment. It was not working as a team, that would have been Webb blowing up, talking to the Lino before awarding a drop ball for the ref breaking play.

No, he gave what he thought he saw, the player definitely moved his body to the ball and contact was made, in normal play time that could have looked like an arm made contact with the ball, and he had the commonsense to consult the linesman.

He got that one spot on, and the one with Bolasies less than graceful theatrics 100% correct, neither were penalties.

The Bolasie incident looked a pen at the time. I've since seen the replays and I still think it was a pen so no I don't think it was a particularly stand out performance from Webb

Not sure how it became a free kick to Villa afterwards though. Can't blame him for the Jedi incident, as he was following the player dropping back, but the 4th official and lino maybe should have seen it.

At the game I thought he had a stinker but after watching the replay, he made some very good calls (sadly).

I thought his refereeing was very indifferent he made some good calls and some bad ones and like others have said the mind boggles how he gave Guzan the kick after their player injured themselves going in on our player but I think Guzan deserves a bit of credit for his good sportsmanship to pump the ball upto Speroni.

Regardless of the penalty incident, which was still a fiasco, as no ref should ever have to get themselves in a position where they need to reverse a penalty decision, he was still a joke. The first penalty shout on Bolasie was a definite penalty as he was caught. And Guzan was lucky to stay on the pitch after kicking out at Jedinak. Also one of their players did a deliberate handball which should be an automatic yellow card. Nothing. Sh*t ref.

Perhaps Webb was convinced that the defender had handled and as such awarded a penalty. The assistant flagged and when Webb went over I understand that his assistant uttered words to the effect "100% it hit his chest". At this point Webb clearly felt that the linesman was in a better position to see the incident and was 100% convinced, hence Webb changed his mind. They worked as a team and in the end reached the correct decision.

Howard Webb was facing away from the incident and didn't see Guzan making contact with Jedinak.Referees don't have eyes in the back of their heads !

We would have been very upset if that had been awarded against us !
