My top three, or should that be bottom three:

3. Being relegated two consecutive seasons with Malcolm Allison. Even the wonderful cup run did not stop the pain of missing out on a promotion immediately after.

2. Leicester at Wembley in the play-off final. Sat there dumbfounded for fully thirty minutes after the end of the game.

The winner though....

1. Sitting in the car, IKEA car park, the soon to be ex shopping, rain pizzing down, windows misted and Oldham beating Southampton 4-3 as we got crushed at Arsenal and the impossible, relegation, happening.

Plenty, but one that still wrankles is the Cup Semi in 76 and it still hurts today - My 9 year old self genuinely thought we were going to win the FA Cup

Sash i had a £1 WIN on us at 250-1.!!!!
From the First Round.
Saw all the games in that Cup Run.

Blimey 251 quid back in winnings - you could have bought a house for that back then al

I am not sure what pains me the most - that it wasnt a penalty for the first as it was well outside the box or that we simply didnt play on the day

I think its the latter

I have hated Southampton ever since and to make matters worse our next door neighbour a the time, who was a loverly fella, was a Saints fan and although he didnt rub it in - he was over the fecking moon obvioulsy

Leicester at Wembley for the 96 play-off final. The moment Claridge scored, there was a mass exodus of red and blue towards the exits. I was only 12 at the time, but was stunned into total silence as we walked back to the car. Took me at least 20 minutes before i opened my mouth and asked "What happened?"

It was five days after my 12th birthday, and it was the WORST late birthday present ever. Needless to say, 1997 and Hopkin was pure redemption. Same goes for 2004 in Cardiff and 2013 last year.

Not a very long memory, but it will stay with me for ever: losing to Newcastle last month. As someone else posted in the immediate aftermath, I felt sick.

Apart from that, hitch-hiking with a school pal for a cup tie at scunthorpe in January 1960. They were two divisions above us, but we gave a great account of ourselves - but lost 1-0. I have probably had worse Palace experiences than that, but the memory of hitch-hiking back to London - we got back at about six on the Sunday morning - on a cold and dark January night will always live with me.

There's been so many for me....losing to Bristol City in the play-offs after Ben Watson had missed a penatly for us that would of seen us go to Wembley.

Charlton relegating us in 2005.

Although we did end up surviving on the last day at Hillsborough I will always remember the previous game at home to West Brom where if we won we would of been safe. I think it was 1-1 and Ambrose had a shot in the last minute that got saved of the line by a defender and meaning we had to go to the last game of the season not knowing if we would survive. Walking out the ground I felt sick and nervous at how close we had just come....but then again Hillsborough was one of the best days being a Palace fan so who would change it now!

Apart from the obvious, seeing Andrew Johnson throw his boots into the crowd after the 2nd leg v Watford where we were unable to turn around a 3-0 agg score. That for me felt like an end of era and I knew we wouldn't be back in the Prem for while.

Definitely losing the Cup Final. While we’re sitting pretty in the Premier League, all the relegations and play-off failures don’t seem to matter as much.

But in 1990 the FA cup final was everything, I was nine years old not hardened to the heartbreaks of following Palace. Even twenty-four years later it still hurts. Our one chance at real glory and who knows how different our club and even English football would look if we’d just held on in that first match.

Jonathan Fortune, that c***.

And Danny Higginbotham.

Probably up there for me, I was sat behind the goal and the moment the ball hit the back of the net I remember thinking we were down. I may be wrong, but I think that may have been one of those days when we played Glad All Over at the end after throwing away a win. Gutting.
