Oddly enough, I have fond memories of Jim at left back, which is where he spent most of his first couple of seasons. He was quick down the flanks and could put a cross in, ball skills that served him well when he transitioned to centre half. As for being our best centre half ever, he really wasn't. Ninja and Thorn were both better, not that either meant even close to as much to the club.

Cannon was fantastic. I recall in 79/80 season he scored what was described by one Sunday journalist as the best goal he's ever seen scored by a centre half. He broke up an attack and then ran the full length of the pitch to volley in the cross. I think it was against Ipswich, can't find footage anywhere though.


Certainly was,one of the best goal's selhurst park will ever see.

Syd, i read your post yesterday and it gave me real optimism for todays game.I too was at the 73 game, aged 7 getting squashed in the W.Horse end with my Dad.That was a special day, one of my earliest football memories, and today has to rank highly as well.Great atmosphere and all the more enjoyable cos i kept thinking of your post,cheers mate!.
