Dowie was dreadful in the transfer market. Andrews was most likely the worst but we didn't pay a lot for him so no real pain there. Boyce was a great signing but he was on a free so a no brainer really. Speroni an obvious plus point of his dealings.

I do feel you would have seen more signings as bad as Andrews if Dowie had been given more money to spend.

In 05/06, Macanuff and Morrison v Ward, Reich and Macken.

Could have been worse. And a lot better. Hmmmm.

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham

Dowie had Wayne Andrews with him at Oldham.

I might be wrong but I think Wayne Andrews was signed in a part exchange deal involving Gareth Williams.

Andy Preece anyone?

I think he was better than Calvin Andrew !
At least Preece came to us with a goalscoring record at his previous club, Stockport.

I believe Phil Parkinson was the manager at Colchester at the time.Whilst at Colchester he also signed another ex-Palace player in Neil Danns from Blackburn for a paltry £15,000.

Great hair style too, stayed in the game and was managing and coaching.

Loads of factors have their influence:

Scouts reports
availability
wages
cost
Agents fees

added to this that bigger clubs will buy the best players, which leaves clubs like us scrabbling around for leftovers.

Also SJ may have placed his own restrictions in relation to Agents fees and cost/wages

Plus the Dowies brothers were utter shlte in the transfer market. A blind monkey could have done as well as them,....or even Wayne Andrews

I disengage, I turn the page.

For me Wayne Andrews fitted into that, really trying hard, really wanted him to do well, but just never going to cut it category. Or does my memory deceive me?

I think Dowie was ok in the transfer market, but his biggest mistake was going out with such a defensive lineup (specificially, Hall and Rihalati centre mid - things started to happen once Hughes came into the starting lineup) in the first six games, yielding a point.

This is a spectacularly belated Wayne Andrew-rant by the way Cucking. I'm picturing a man staring blankly at a wall, sitting alone in a darkening room as the sunlight outside disappears. A memory swims into his consciousness swiftly followed by uncontainable rage and he leaps, foaming from the mouth, tearing at his hair screaming - "ANDREWS?!! WHY???!!!!!! NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!"

Sh*t. What? Rollers. No. Yeah. Sh*t.

I think if Dowie had not signed anybody that season we would have stayed up.
The Team that went up were never really given a chance.
By the end of the season the team that failed at Charlton was similar to the promoted team.

I hope this time we play the lads that took us up.

Agree Alan 100% was listening to shipperly the other day who was our captain and then promptly dropped the next season. I'd like to see the nucleus of this seasons team with an obvious replacement for Zaha (Ince would be nice) and two new forwards which is the main department that needs adding too.

I always felt really bad criticising Wayne Andrews cos he always put a shift in and you could never knock his application, but him coming on was usually a concession that the game was probably up. I liked him and wanted him to be good, but he wasn't anything approaching Premiership standard.
