John Salako surely?! Although he could've done with a smaller shirt however...

I used to love watching Aleks Kolinko! Ok so he isn't the best keeper we have had by any stretch of the imagination, but he was def entertaining to watch, and he could throw the ball further than he could kick it.

As one who has been to Selhurst as a boy in the 40's
starting from the days of Vic Rouse I can definitely say that John Jackson was the best of them all - remember he played in the days where a 'Nat Lofthouse body charge' was legal and keepers were fair game and therefore brave - he was, and in spades.
Of the modern era then Nigel Martyn was consistently good. Julian I am afraid has some way to go to get in the top 4 - his one weakness is making the Command Decision of when to come and when to stay - the most difficult of the keeping arts. So, my top 4:
Jackson
Martyn
Bill Glazier
John Burridge

Palace have been generally blessed in this position (and used to have reliable goal scorers, too: Ronnie Allen, Cliff Holton, Johnny Byrne and then Wright & Bright - when will the next one arrive ? - hope it's soon.)

Spot on. Jacko by a country mile. 1957 start for me though.
Would probably just shade Burridge over Glazier though.

Is this a five minute argument, or the full half hour? [Link]

I think that Paul Hammond should be on the list of contenders. He was in goal when I used to go home and away, round about 73-75. I think that he left to go and play in America. Anyone else remember him?

Yes, I remember Hammond. Big Mal dropped Jacko in favour of Hammond, making the guy instantly unpopular with a section of the support.

However after a shaky start, I thought Paul had the makings of a very good 'keeper - then he decided to go and play in the States.

I am glad someone mentioned Vic Rouse because he was an excellant keeper and very loyal. John Jackson though has to be the very tops. He was picked by Martin Peters (I think) as the best keeper never to play for England. Special character too.

For the avoidance of doubt any comments in response to a previous post are directed to its ideas and not at any, or all, posters personally.

For me Vic Rouse has to be in that list, certainly was on a par with Jackson & Glazier if not better.

Having been a regular since the early sixies, the two greats have to be Jacko & Nigel!
Unluckiest, Suckling, as after the 9 nil never the same.
One that few will remember, Tony Millington, good keeper and a full international. If had played more could have been up there.
Worst, Flinders, suffered as could not live up to expectations.
Overall probably the one position that has never really caused us problems.

Bill Glazier was excellent and might have lasted a lot longer at the Palace, rather than make the move to Coventry when he did.
He didn't want to leave but a certain senior player at the club during that time thought that Jackson was better.Bill thought that this guy had a strong bond with the management and rightly or wrongly his spell came to an abrupt end.
Having said that Jacko was brilliant!!

I was gutted when we sold Bill - I was a goalie too and he was my hero - Bill always got a huge cheer when he returned with Coventry - at the time Bill was sold the fee was a world record for a goalkeeper

What about Vic Rouse ? - Welsh International in the days when they had a half decent team!

We have been lucky enough to have had a string of top keepers over the years and it's impossible to choose the best of them. Julian is well up there with all of the previous ones.
