One of my greatest memories standing in the old school Arthur was Madden's penalty in the Blackburn play off match.

He scored at the Sainsbury's end; froze for a second; then made his way to us in the Arthur, finger aloft. Hundreds of us (it felt) suddenley surged towards him, almost like someone had pulled the plug and we were all sucked down towards him. I loved that man. I don't think there's been a bigger Palace cult hero who played such few games for the club.

I know where your coming from Bubbs.WE were standing there as well,it was superb when every one surged.Oh happy days....

i used to stand on the arthur , i remember playing millwall in a cup match about 84ish with my mate lee , we scored , everyone jumping and cheering , they scored , everyone except me and my mate started juming and cheering , we just looked at each other and started making our way slowly to the front , haha , funny now !

I remember that game the stand was 95% Millwall and just a small band of us Palace huddled together like a band of refugees, What about all the kids that used to be at the front Banging on the advertising boards.

Completely different experience. Never been as good since. Shame the Holmesdale didn't have a roof for the several years after the seats went in, Summer 1990. Sob. Best ever season finishing 3rd though.

started in the Holmesdale terrace when I was a kid with me mates, drifted around to The New Stand when they all deserted and left me on my own, used stand as close to the half way line on the New Stand Terracing.

Favourite memory, john Sewell lobbing the ball from what seemed to be fifty yards and Leeds keeper, Gary Sprake letting in through his hands for a late equaliser.

I was a Whitehorse Lane end lad but would change ends at half time to the Holmesdale, which you could before the Arthur Wait stand was built.

It's remarkable that the stand was built during the close season. We clinched promotion on April 19th 69 and work was started almost immediately and was completed for the start of the next season.Arthur was ever present on site and was apparently known to have given the guys working there a few quid as a bonus.

So for me that very first game at home to Man U was a little bit special, seeing the likes of Bobby Charlton,a school kid hero of mine, after Johnny Byrne of course, actually playing a League Match at Selhurst was awesome.
Before kick off the Palace Dollies formed a tunnel as the players entered onto the pitch,in the middle of the stand as it was then, and flowers were handed out the Man U players wives.

Just entering through the turnstiles into a new stand was a thrill itself and the following 90 minutes which ended even was a dream come true.

I met some of their supporters before the match and was chatting to them, which you could do then, and they were still around later in the day when we went into The George for a pint.
They remarked on how much they liked our stadium but I guess they were just being polite, which was also common then.

It was a great day!!

........................Then along came Johnny Byrne! and the rest, as they say, is history.....................

Many fond memories of standing in the "Arthur", the long old haul up the stairs next to the away supporters, away fans faces squashed up against the little section of iron railings at the bottom of the stairs hurling abuse. Chelsea and Millwall,,getting chucked out for swearing, the Brummie dressed as Hitler, and of course.....that poxy iron girder.

Oh the days eh.

Started off sitting in the Arthur Waite seats with my old man, when I was 10/11

Moved down to the standing section, at the front with my mates from about age 12-14

Then over to the Holmesdale terracing in (I think) the 76-77 season and have stood/sat there off & on for 35 years

Was about 16 when the New Stand was built. Club asked for volunteers to go down and help get the ground ready for the Man Utd game. Ended up cleaning the new wooden seats with Ross Jenkins. On the morning of the game helped to set up the new bar in the supporters club building, Bert Head came in and spoke to me, still remember the feeling of awe!
We stood right next to the centre post which was our base for 10 years or so, just by the New Stand Boys. Their chanting always attracted opposition attention and it frequently got hairy! Particularly remember West Ham climbing over the wall to get at us.
Loads of memories - screaming at George Best in that first game, always getting thrashed by London clubs, Norman Hunter doing John Craven right in front of us, Don Rogers and John Hughes going on mazy runs, 1979 against Burnley with the 52,000, great days!
