Returning to the subject matter, A YouGov poll found Conservative members backing Liz Truss by a margin of 24 points, so Sunak badly needs everything to go right. Members will receive ballot papers in the coming week.Members like Conservative voters at large, have a tendency to vote with some alacrity and typically just over half return by post.By and large minds have been made up and Sunak only has a short period to turn the tide. It's difficult to see Sunak getting the Members vote. While I have no time for either candidate, it was refreshing to see that Truss is to outlaw wolf whistling. It's not often a politician gets behind a cause that doesn't affect them personally

Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry. |

It's difficult to see Sunak getting the Members vote. Truss has seemingly an unassailable lead. I have actually been in conversation with a plethora of members, across an array of constituencies, and there is precious little support for Sunak. Heseltine famously said: "He who wields the knife never wears the crown." .There is a small but powerful sense Sunak backstabbed Boris Johnson whereas Truss is viewed as being loyal to him by not resigning. One of her claims is that if she promises something she always carries it out yet she promised to be faithful to her husband yet didn't manage to carry that one through. Every time I think of her I think of cheese or pork so I can't really take her seriously

The media turned against him and as we know they can cancel anyone. Yes the left wanted him out the minute he took over and yes some Tory voters also wanted him out. I didn’t as he was and still is the best the tories have. I think covid has seriously skewed how good he could have been. That’s putting the finance aside. Time will tell but Sunak or truss is all that’s left so we have to suck it up I’m afraid.

If people in London gave their opinions on trawlermen or farming they'd be told they don't understand the problems but apparently everybody can explain city life. This appears to be a commonly held opinion among those here who live in London. I think it is seriously flawed. It's nothing new. My mother railed about the arrival of the West Indians. Other relatives, living in Southall, upped and moved to Cornwall when the Indians arrived. They did OK, becoming millionaires, one as a builder, the other servicing farm equipment. So have many of the Indians. No-one ever lives another's life. I don't live either that of a farmer, or a fisherman, and some incomers complain bitterly about the way the farmers fail to maintain footpaths and gates. Nor have the ethnic British lived the lives of the immigrants. They have no real understanding of what it is like to not know where the next meal will come from, whether your home will be destroyed by war or how you will save a sick child. We can all agree that managing immigration is essential. It's not the need, it's whether it's possible that is the real question. We are though where we are, and constantly complaining about how we got here achieves nothing. We had better all get used to it, because it isn't going away, and will only accelerate as the impact of climate change bites. Everything in life changes. London has always been changing. Not liking those changes is par for the course for some. If you cannot adapt, then you will either be unhappy, or you had best find somewhere else to live. Finding ways for the various communities to live alongside one another, without rancour, and then to gradually mix is a well trodden path. Dealing with crimes, from whatever source, should be the expectation of all. Produce a harmonious, tolerate atmosphere, in which people can work and play alongside one another, and the crime will naturally diminish. I don't have to live these lives to make these observations! In fact, I am probably better able to make them as I am not emotionally involved, so have a more objective perspective. I left London 57 years ago to pursue my career and be able to buy a house. Not because of immigration! I don't care who my neighbours are. What I care about is how they behave, and there are plenty of ethnic Brits whose behaviour I find thoroughly distasteful. I don't like cities. I don't like the crowds, noise and rush. I enjoy space, nature and peace and quiet. Those who don't like their own city, for whatever reason, always have the option of doing what I have done. It all depends on your priorities, but moaning cannot solve your problems. Moving can.

Oh, we are obviously going to end up with Truss. It's hardly worth holding a vote. What a nonsensical situation. A bunch of activists, boosted by the recruitment of UKIP supporters, will now decide who is our PM, choosing someone the Tory MPs didn't want. The Tory Party membership foisted the blathering Johnson on the country, and it took 3 years for the MPs to dump him. Now they choose someone who is even worse, which seemed impossible. Truss is seriously dim. I just hope the Party surround her with wise heads and insist she listens to them. What has happened to the once great Party I used to support? It has turned into a pale shadow of what it once was. It's lost its integrity and sense of morality. Any Party that allows people like Johnson or Truss into No 10 does not deserve to govern. That they do is only because of the even worse state of the opposition. We need a political revolution if we are ever going to find our way in the world again. We so need a charismatic leader to emerge who can form a new party and get the backing they need. We need to consign the Tories and Labour to history.

Except I never mentioned immigration; as far as I'm concerned anyone born in England is English. And I have taken the same option and moved out of London.

No, you didn't, but the implication was there and is the reasoning generally given by those who hold this opinion. I don't mind visiting cities for special occasions, but live there every day? No thanks.

The culture secretary, Nadine Dorries, has granted listed status to the plaque of Cecil Rhodes at Oxford. Seems that the only half way Tories left in the party are women, her and Kemi....I wonder if Truss would have done it.
