Unfortunately the cheating colonial did the England team a favour, as everyone is now wrapped up in glorious outrage at the Bairstow stumping, rather than the absolutely appalling amateur hour that preceded. 4 top order Batsmen dismissed in under 9 overs for less than 30 runs is pathetic test cricket. Crawley 3 Runs Overs faced 1 So while the dismissal of Bairstow is at best bad sportsmanship, and at worst outright cheating. the fault for the loss does not lay with the uppity colonials, but with our top order batsmen, who bar Duckett have been utterly shi1t.

Yes, but what I'm getting at is why, as suggested, you cannot change the rules. Edited by Hrolf The Ganger (03 Jul 2023 1.09pm) Thanks for clarifying that. But I didn't suggest the rules couldn't be changed, simply that IMO it would be very difficult to reword the existing rule to ensure that what you rightly called yesterday's "nonsense" couldn't happen again. I've given up trying.

Bairstow grounded his bat in the crease before he left it straight after Carey had caught the ball, the square leg umpire was walking too - gamesmanship is one thing, this is more like footballers playing on during an injury, doesn't have the safety implications but there is a professional understanding - it should never have been given out.

I do wonder if the 'VAR' person accidentally pressed the wrong button.

I think so too imo the ball is dead once the bat is grounded in the crease.

It's as clear as day that Bairstow made a point of demonstrating that he was returning to the crease before then departing to confer with his colleague. Play should have been deemed to have stopped at that point. The fact that BOTH umpires at that point had basically stopped umpiring - the square leg man staring his journey to the stumps and the bowler's end umpire turning towards the bowler - make it even more bizarre that someone in the stands managed to decree that the ball was still in play.

I don't know what footage you guys have seen, but Bairstow definitely does not ground his bat. He drags his foot back and walks out of the crease. Carey collects the ball and immediately tosses it at the stumps as the ball was still in play. As unsporting as this may have been, and I agree that it was unsporting, it was out. Only Cummins could have altered the outcome.

As Bairstow is the wicket keeper he will be looking for any opportunity to "mankad" an Aussie in the next Test so they need to be careful
