Our leaders do not do what would be best for the people of the UK. If they did, we would be fracking, mining coal, building nuclear power stations along with pumping billions into research for effective alternatives so that the UK is totally self-dependent for its power needs. Ditto with the Germans, ditto with the Yanks and so on. And this was happening, or rather moves towards it. Especially in the US but the UK was making progress as well. Then it all came to a halt? Why? Why would any political leadership want their nation to be dependent on foreign-controlled fuels? Makes no sense unless you think your leadership has been utterly corrupted. As the Wests has been. I remember when it was the lefties who were told "if you like it so much why dont you go and live in Russia".. I don't admire Putin because he is Russian. I admire him because he actually leads. Puts his own people and their interests at the top of his agenda. Does what he thinks is best for those who elected him to lead them. Does anybody think that Johnson does anything for anybody other than Johnson? Or Starmer? Or Biden? Or Macron? Or anybody else in any kind of senior leadership role in the West?

The comparison with Hitler does not and was not intended to stand close scrutiny. The obvious similarity is a dictator invading neighbours, with sympathy from some sections of the British Exactly this.

Our existence is at risk, but not primarily because of Putin. The existential threat is far more likely about migration, not bombs. The comparison with Hitler does not and was not intended to stand close scrutiny. The obvious similarity is a dictator invading neighbours, with sympathy from some sections of the British As you know we do have existential threats....some might say we sleepwalked beyond them twenty years ago....but the present existential threat isn't from migrating Europeans....most of whom wouldn't be coming here anyway. In terms of sympathy, did you watch the Rod Liddle video? I don't think it's right that it's sympathy with Putin over recognition that this situation was wholly avoidable. While I don't see an existential threat myself I certainly know our living standards will be going down and this is just the economic frigging icing on the frigging cake.

All I do know is that history teaches us that in this modern-day and age, it's not so much the issue of taking territory that causes a military problem but rather the holding of it and I credit Putin with being smarter than thinking he can do that. Russia has been prodded and poked for well over a decade and now it has decided to hit back. I loathe the fact that Europeans are fighting each other and hope that it all comes to an end very, very quickly.

Let's see how this pans out first. Personally, I suspect/hope it will just be about securing the break-away republics but who honestly knows? I find your admiration of the thug Putin and your tacit support of his invasion of Ukraine sickening. Edited by georgenorman (24 Feb 2022 7.30am)

At the risk of repeating what others may have said - Putin is poking the West and in my opinion intends to take over Ukraine whilst threatening nuclear war to anyone who wants to intervene.
