Stirling, regarding your last post, I firmly believe that a significant proportion of Afghans - and it wouldn't surprise me if it's a majority - are perfectly OK with the Taliban takeover.

Apparently a pew poll showed 99 percent support for Sharia....and we are taking 20,000 in based upon empathy.

We can't even house people as it is.....huge waiting lists. What planet are these politicians on?

Yeah, sounds fair to me- bunch of self interested on the make people-hypocrites like the rest of us-although we aren"t getting paid for it.

If the system worked, this would be a great country.

The USA and UK can only defend themselves by fighting these people on their own soil.

That is the reason for the 2001 invasion, to withdraw now invites action against us in our own countries.

It is being described as imbecilic by TB, a gift to jihad groups, surely he is right.

Out of Europe, treated with indifference by the USA, failing, in danger of breaking up, the UK is on the ropes.

The USA could not even be bothered to consult with us, a G7 member.

It looks like relegation to me.

China must be mulling over Taiwan at the moment.

From their perspective this will be the president they want.

Whoever made the call that it was culturally ok for the Afghans stationed with allied troops to get in and rape boys, who were heard screaming in the night, needs to be found....political or military they need to be found and they need to face a court.

Why hasn't this already been done?

Back when the British were the British and in India we didn't allow the Hindus to throw widows onto funeral fires.

No doubt. An army doesn't fold that quickly unless there is major support for what replaces it overnight. At the same time though there are countless thousands of Afghans who have a different outlook and are absolutely terrified of what they see coming. A tragedy playing out before our eyes.

I see that traitorous bLIAR has opened his lying mouth again, blaming everyone bar himself, for going in with the US in 2001 & now calling the US imbecilic.

God, how I dislike that c***

This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise.

Genuinely puzzled about the wider end game here although mid to long term, I see no point in the West being in places like Afghanistan unless it is to actually bring about genuine and long-lasting change. And after 20 years it is clear that this was never the case.

Beginning to suspect that Biden might have gone a bit rouge on this. The push-back against him seems to have been from all sides, and with Blair, who is probably the most vocal and visible manifestation of the 'Global' elite, turning on him on this way, smacks of something not adding up.

The issue with any career politician is understanding that once they achieve the highest office, then their mindset seems to alter (with notable exceptions-Blair amongst them). All their lives have been dedicated to achieving that title on their business card and I suspect that once they have it, a gaping hole in their lives becomes apparent.

Then it becomes about legacy. Maybe, and I only want to whisper it, this is about Biden shaking himself free of those who have been manipulating and wanting to write himself a chapter in history as the US President who took the big decisions, no matter what. That perhaps he recognizes his deteriorating mental reasoning and is going on one last rampage of self-actualization? For good and bad. Actually, grasped the reins of power and used them?

Or else I could be over-thinking this all but the force of Blairs language, against somebody he had been championing, speaks volumes.

I think Biden is taking one for the team (Democrats) getting all the bad news out then he steps down due to ill health and Harris has a clean slate and a head start on the next election.

If I am wrong and Biden stays then they lose the next election if the GOP can find someone half decent. Harris may run but it will be difficult for her to distance herself from Biden's decisions when she has been their 4 years.

If sleepy Joe goes soon she has 2/3 years in power to distance herself from him.
