There are people on here crying the last day or so that Riedewald was dropped for PVA. He is not a left back and never will be so why shouldn’t he be dropped for PVA. He got the fans player of the month so people expect him to be a regular starter and have the audacity to say that he could play as a number 10.

I agree that he should have been given a lot more chances in Luka’s position and has not been treated fairly but he is no full back and he is certainly not a number 10.

People on here banging on about his passing being great. Do you lot watch the games or do you sit there with your blinkers on blind to his faults ? Yes, he tries to pass the ball but it very rarely ends up with our own player. He did a decent job when thrown into the position but he was never going to keep it.

.. and in what respect is he worse than any other in the current Palace team ? We don't score goals for 2 reasons: 1. Zaha does not win penalties any more and 2. we can't CONSTRUCTIVELY pass the ball ..

PVA is by far a better left back than Riedewald and it was correct to replace him on Saturday. I hadn’t been as impressed as others in Riedewalds left back displays but did think he was doing short passes When going forward better than PVA. Think his displays should have gotten him in the starting line up and perhaps in place of McCarthy who I haven’t yet seen play that well other than the Man City away. With that said we all know Hodgson has a favoured defensive midfield and I don’t believe he would have or will change that whilst manager of us? Riedewald is not a left back and perhaps it will take injuries in midfield or a new manager to find out if he is good enough? The result Saturday had nothing to do with him not playing, we would have lost whoever was at left back. Missed chances and referee and goalkeeper howlers were the reason we got beaten :-(

Absolutely makes sense for PvA to return to LB. No one sane and who actually watches the game thinks otherwise. But what have the players in midfield (apart from Luka) done to deserve their spots?

Neither of the Jimmy Macs are playing that well right now. Kouyate is a better box-to-box midfielder than either of them too.

We need someone who can pick class pass in midfield - or even a quick pass. We play out very slowly.

So I'm not sure, Palace Chick, you can say the result had nothing to do with him not playing because we may have created more chances given all that possession, with him on the pitch.

So why did Jairo get POTM award from a lot of Palace fans? (I didn't vote at all so no axe to grind on that one, although he was probably the most consistent player during the month)
A lot of people have commented favourably on this site about Jairo's passing in the games he played. Perhaps, therefore, it is you who has been wearing blinkers.
You give the impression of being a great PvA fan so perhaps that is a factor in your assessment.
I, too wanted to see PvA back in the team and expected Roy to put him back. He's one of our better players.
The purpose of my earlier entry re Jairo was simply to ask how he might get a place in the team as I think he deserves a longer run given the way he stepped into an unfamiliar LB position and handled better than many of us would have expected

Would like to see us try and play:

Guaita
Ward Tompkins Sakho PVA
Luca Reidewald
Mayer
Zaha Townsend
Tosun

At least against the weaker teams.

Audacity's a bit strong, I think. The reason I mentioned Jairo being tried further forward was just getting glimpses of him around the box on occasions and thinking that he looked quite good at those quick, short balls in. I think he's got an eye for a pass in those circumstances.

At the risk of more brickbats from you, Ed, I wouldn't mind seeing him tried on the left side of midfield, trying to link up with Wlf (and PVA)when we go forward. Defensively, I think he's robust enough for the rough and tumble of such a position and could provide back-up for PVA.

He’s done quite well at left back and been tidy enough on the ball but no more than that. Neither has he looked particularly incisive in midfield against lower level opponents in the cups in the last couple of seasons.

Think he’s been unlucky to be dropped... he was getting better every game and his passing is an asset no question... he deserves more games .. a run , players do improve when they get a run of games.. something Roy never seems to do....BUT who knows there could be more injuries so he may get another chance! Let’s hope so...

I apologise if my wording was a bit over the top. I agree with you that Jairo at least tries to play football but I do not agree that he could play in a number 10 role. Like every player he would need 10 straight games to get some momentum but he won’t be getting that anytime soon under Roy.

Watch the Southampton game again and tell me that his passing was up to scratch. Attempting a pass but not actually pulling it off is absolutely pointless. “Nearly never won the race.”

And I am not just singling him out for that, Our passing as a whole is absolutely dreadful. We seem to have a team of players who struggle with the very simple stuff. I wonder is that because Roy focuses so much on tactics and positioning that he leaves the ball work behind. I watched an interview after the Saints away game and he said that they do not practice free kicks or corners and that it is all done with Dean Kiely on video.

Also I am not PVA biggest fan in the slightest we need a big upgrade on him moving forward but he does a job and will do for the time being.

I totally agree. He has shown that he is one of the best passers of the ball, if not the best in the team. He is very accomplished and technically gifted with his passing. Unfortunately for him, this is not enough for Roy. If you are not in the mould of Luka, the two Maccas, Cheikh i.e. defensive minded then you are not going to fit into Roys ultra rigid structure. I've seen others argue that hes come in for cup games but hasnt impressed.. As you've said he has now had a run of games and has looked decent. Players will find it so difficult to be out in the cold for so long and then just come in for one game. In Jairos case the poor lad had been totally ostracised from Roys team on the pitch. To me there is a player there, just another example of Palace ruining a player by being under used imo.

Roys the professional and i'm some bloke on the internet, I get it but surely , surely he could try something different than the anti football he plays in the middle of the park. Meyer, Camarasa, Jairo.. seems such a waste.

Roy pays no attention to individual skill. He purely focuses on shape. There was an interview with Danny Murphy a while back saying this. He said it started well then just got incredibly boring.
