It's a great pity for Palace but - if his statement is accurate - he seems to want to retire and who wouldn't at 62 with a big pay off! It always amazes me how so many managers just can't let go - multi millionaires in there 60's and 70's. Still wanting/needing the limelight I suppose. Thanks for what you did over the past six months Sam.

Sad that he's gone. Grateful for what he did in a short period of time. I hope he isn't tempted out of retirement and enjoys it. Has also given us the maximum amount of time to find a replacement. Now up to Steve and the board to find that replacement. All I ask is not some ex Palace player. This doesn't have to be a rushed appointment. Thanks Sam for keeping us up and the three wins against the big boys that I'll remember for a long while.

dosnt it seem rather strange that if he just wants to retire that he didn't tell sp and give club time to sort things behind the scenes, and also explain to the players and staff....why so abrupt...dosnt ring true reason to me....

Is the statement true or are we not investing what he wanted us to - we will probably never know.

This post has been merged from a topic called 'why so abrupt departure' by Guntrisoft I just wonder why sam left so abruptly if just wants to retire he could have had meeting with players and staff explained the situation and assured them of a smooth transition. why just go from a meeting with sp and clear his desk? seems more like an angry reaction than a planned controlled one

Palace was probably his last shot at shaking off the label of just being a firefighter, he could have repeated what he did at Bolton. After the year he's had it's understandable however, he needed to get back in to salvage his reputation after the thing with England but for him it seems that's all it needed to be. I hope he's true to his word, it would make him the only manager to leave us both on a high and with no bad feelings since Paul Hart.

Agreed. It's a little fishy that a matter of days ago he was talking about his 17/18 plans and then this happens so abruptly. There's more to this for me. Either way Palace is a rollercoaster. Let's move on quickly. Most important thing for me is to continue to tie up the Zaha and Sakho deals.

New member (Troll) ? Why is somebody a troll for asking a perfectly reasonably question? Surely the person trolling is the one that can't or won't offer a reasoned response so throws out an insult intead

This post has been merged from a topic called 'why so abrupt departure' by Guntrisoft I think its a fair enough point and the whole situation doesn't seem to add up. He arrives and brings in all his backroom people, he indicates he wants to rebuild his career post England, he is supported in January to the extent that the shareholders are personally asked to put up additional money for transfers, he talks very actively about plans for next season etc. The next thing is he suddenly goes and says he wants to spend more time with his family. It has similarities to the Dowie departure and for me, does not ring true. No doubt the full story will come out in time.
