Sam in his news conference said: "Van Aanholt was a major saviour in our run at Sunderland last season, a major part of that success story." Same again please.

Left side sorted! Nice work Steve and big Sam, just need a midfielder and I'll be optimistic about staying up and some!

I'm glad we will have signed a left back and I think he and Schlupp will compliment each other well....BUT...£14million for Van Aanholt. The worlds gone mad.

For whatever reason, a lot of left backs seem flaky defensively. Ashley Cole became a fantastic all round left back, but for a very long time was an absolute liability with terrible positioning. It was only when he'd ironed out those wrinkles that Chelsea took him. If SA can turn that side of PvA's game around we would have quite an asset. As for the price...well it's just a bats*** crazy market. Back when we were in the championship, the idea of 30m for Yala would have been beyond laughable.
If you want to live in a world full of kindness, respect and love, try to show these qualities. |

Bexley Dave Can you hear the Brighton sing? I can't hear a ******* thing! "The most arrogant, obnoxious bunch of deluded little sun tanned, loafer wearing mummy's boys I've ever had the misfortune of having to listen to" (Burnley forum) |

Back end of last season I agree, but this season definitely not! You clearly haven't watched much of us. He's totally reverted to type again and has been at fault for goals every week recently. Great be happy then that he's going. I'm sure all your troubles will leave with PVA. Is that it though? I mean you've more than made your point. Or can we look forward to loads of told you so posts going forward if it sdoesn't work out, just like we had from your Geordie rivals with Pardew. Is it a North East thing or something?

If we stay up then the price is irrelevant. Interesting to see what would happen next season when Papa Souare comes back. Competition for places? Surely not!

January prices are normally higher anyway. But remember we have just had to pay £12m for Schlupp who isn't even first choice left back or wing. £9m-£14m (depending on the eventual price) for a regular starter doesn't sound as bad in comparison. And also worth noting that the £12m we paid for Schlupp was the same as a rejected offer in the summer, so you could even argue we got him "on the cheap"!

That's a very good point. If he can replicate that, and its a very big if, then he could turn out to be a decent signing for you's. He was better last season, but still there were major flaws that were glossed over because the team started winning. Personally I'm a little torn over the transfer tbh. I probably would have liked to have kept him, but if the reported £14 million is true then we would have been daft not to accept it. Apparently he'd become quite a disruptive influence in the dressing room lately and isn't the most liked of players, so maybe this deal might be the best for all concerned. Not surprised over the disruptive influence claim. It's not always true, but when someone is trying to angle a move away - and the Sunderland statement saying he has said he wants to leave is a pretty clear indication he has done that - then they will obviously be disruptive. I think he may need the influence of a new DM, or possibly Flamini to try and cover or some of the flaws that are obviously in his game. But given the aerial prowess we have up front, an attacking fullback with a good cross on them could be exactly what we need.
