As the clock to window closure ticks,do sincerely hope that we have not sold our gold only to bring in a series of loan and free signings, then once again complaining that he has never known such a difficult window as this one. That may prove to be closer to the truth than most of us would wish.

Oh dear oh my,what the f*** are playing at in their offices. Are they in dreamland?,,,,no wonder this saga continues. Page 284 and counting. CRYSTAL PALACE included a three-pronged Champions League clause in their bid for Christian Benteke which would have seen them pay another £2.5m for the forward if they gate-crashed the top four. Edited by Asian Eagle (16 Aug 2016 10.53pm) I am beginning to wonder if the negotiations with Liverpool are being done by the office girl at Palace as if this news is true then I can see why our offer was laughed out of the Liverpool office. A rather stupid set of clauses if you ask me....Laughing stock comes to mind!
Supported Palace for over 69 years since the age of 7 and have seen all the ups and downs and will probably see many more ups and downs before I go up to the big football club in the sky. |

Just to play devils advocate, but I read somewhere that it was 2.5 million out of the £30m and it was for use to finish in the top 4 over the next 4 years. Although the last 2.5 million is unlikely I dont think it is as pie in the sky as people are making out (who won the league last season?). Liverpool would still end up with 27.5 million as the other clauses seemed much more likely. As I said, I am only playing devils advocate and I agree that SP seems to be playing this one wrong, but I dont think that clause is as embarrassing as some people are making out.

Liverpool considered our various add on clauses as widely unrealistic and we have made ourselves a laughing stock in the process. raises an interesting point. He could have been playing the 'first bid is completely unreasonable, to make future bids seem more appealing' though. Add-ons are a strange beast. for them to be effective, they have to be both easily achievable and un-achievable at the same time in order to satisfy/massage the egos of both parties. It has to be that Bet that looks too good to refuse. I think Parish has missed the mark with this, as he appears to have underestimated how difficult it is to land champions league football. and how difficult it is to get 20 goals in season, If that was truely the deal on the table.

Top eight? We'll be lucky to still be in the PL next May, never mind a European competition. And with the best will in the world, Pardew ain't no Ranieri.

If I was Liverpool and we came with the Champions League clause I'd tell us to go away and grow up. Also 20 goals in a season, very few strikers do that and they will all be in the top 6. Playing 70% of the games is not unrealistic, which means we are trying to buy him for £24.5m and Liverpool value him £32m so it's no surprise they turned us down.

A rather stupid set of clauses if you ask me....Laughing stock comes to mind! Why laughing stock? DO you not have ambition, slightly cfrzy or otherwise? I negotiated a deal recently where our price started at around $1m and (because of add-ons) ended up at near $2m. Negotiation takes many faces. Like Newcastle wanting 35m for Sisokko, if we went in with a bid of 5m and they said "You taking the piss", we would have every recourse to say "Well, you started it!" Today I genuinely feel we will get close to Liverpool's asking price, we will reach agreement and that will be that.
Most certainly not European. |

Whilst I want us to sign Benteke, and as soon as possible, do you not think that Parish is playing hard ball as the closer we get to the end of the window, the more desperate Liverpool will get? There's 18 weeks between the end of this window and the next window which would mean Liverpool 2.16m in wages to a player who's value will massively decrease if he doesn't play for half a season. Yes, it's Liverpool and 2.16m is just a drop in the ocean, but I'm sure they'll want to shift before the end of the window, which if anything makes our hand stronger.

I think Beneteke is capable of scoring 20 goals in a season (when you account for the fact he'll probably take penalties, and cup games). I suspect we'll make another offer, that's more reasonable in terms of add ons, but that the this kind of bid is more about feeling out what they will go for. They weren't going to accept the 24.5m offer....

Liverpool aren't in a rush to sell, and I doubt they'll let him go before the end of the window, without 'leveraging that for more money'. They know a) we've just sold Bolaise for an massive fee b) that the Bolaise money is likely additional money c) that we're desperate. They have 14 days before they're potentially stuck with him. We could have offered 30m upfront, and they'd have knocked it back. Every game makes us more 'needy' not less.

Live and work in Greater Manchester and getting some serious p**s taking over this. Highly embarrassed about our latest offer for Benteke. Just pay the money! As Shearer said on MOTD we are relegation candidates without a proven striker. Everyone knows we are desperate now, so the price goes up each day. We don't want to pay 30m but what are the options - we'll lose a lot more than that being relegated!!!
First match 5th October 1974 - not a good day! |
