Revealed: Why Liverpool rejected Crystal Palace's Christian Benteke bid express.co.uk CRYSTAL PALACE included a three-pronged Champions League clause in their bid for Christian Benteke which would have seen them pay another £2.5m for the forward if they gate-crashed the top four.
Liverpool rejected the bid yesterday after indicating the triggers for the additional payments over a four year period were unrealistic. Qualifying for the Champions League was not the sole criteria for the payment of £2.5m. In addition, Benteke had to play in 70pc of the games and score 20 goals.
The Anfield club is standing firm on its £30m-plus valuation for the Belgium striker, who will be allowed to leave the club just 12 months after arriving from Aston Villa in a £32.5m switch. The bid was Palace’s first official offer and came more than six weeks after they had indicated a willingness to pay around £25m for Benteke during discussions between the clubs. It was tabled on the day they banked £25m from the sale of Yannick Bolasie to Everton and the onus is now firmly on Palace to increase the offer or walk away from discussions. Manager Alan Pardew is desperate to bring in striking reinforcements with Palace’s shortcomings emphasised in their opening weekend defeat to West Brom. West Brom are also keen on Benteke and would be willing to meet Liverpool’s valuation, but the player does not want to move to The Hawthorns. Everton and Sunderland have also been following the fortunes of Benteke, who is seeking around £120,000-a-week in wages. Interesting how they mention this is our first OFFICIAL offer.... Good post. I don't believe Liverpool paid £32.5m fully to Villa, it would be the total package deal, they more than likely haven't paid more than £28m by now based on his performance last year. All these add on clauses are quite standard now, that is why they take time. Do you think we got the full money for Bolasie on Wednesday, I doubt it. People saying pay up the full price now are deluded, it's not how the strange football world works.

Both Palace and Liverpool are displaying everything distasteful in football.

Makesus look like a bunch of jokers that. I like Parish but im certain he lets his ego get tied up in this much more than he should, and its becoming detrimental to the club. Could have just paid the extra few million a month ago, had benteke fit settled in and raring to go. We got good deals for bolassi and gayle to mitigate this. Just very shabby all round frankly...

Your post suggests the board should just spend without constraint. I take the opposite view. Yes, the money may be in the bank but I'd urge the board to strive for the most advantageous deal as possible. And if we suddenly announce today we have indeed bought Benteke, I have to say my first thoughts won't be 'Woop-de-doop we've spent big on a forward' but 'I flippin' hope we havent panicked and bought a 30 million pound knee injury".
When the time comes, I want die just like my Dad - at peace and asleep. |

Surely this is the day to break the 300 barrier and thus sign Benteke.
