They tried this back in the 1860's and had a civil war.

They say the winning side writes history and to some extent that is correct most people believe the civil war started over slavery, actually it was about State's rights versus the Federal government.

Slavery was one of the issues that the southern states felt the Federal government was interfering in but the parallels to Brexit are there it was about self determination and the right to leave the union.

Lincoln even said that to maintain the union he would accept slavery however once the fighting started there was no going back and so it then become about slavery.

By the way the majority of people who fought on the confederate side were poor farmers who didn't own slaves.

Anyway I don't see this happening as however fed up people are the only solution would be another civil war.

America was birthed in war. However, I don't believe that civil war is a requirement.

It all depends on what the republicans are prepared to do to save their way of life.

They only need to look at us and Europe generally to see what's going to be forced upon them.

If Trump leaves then we will see a war inside the Republicans....between the elites and wealthy who want to keep their gravy train and the activists who know what's coming down the pipe and would be forced to pay the far greater price.

Imagine my shock.

This will be interesting, what were these ‘dissident right wing internet places' you saw this on?

Or is this just another troll.

Secession was talked about by Democrats before the election as well....but I doubt you were scornful about that.

Or the odds on Biden sticking to his word here? I was seriously surprised as to how many Obama had deported

He'll stick to it as it's importing voters.

It's one of the reasons that if the Republicans don't break they will never govern.....the die has been cast with Biden...but it was always coming.

This thread has run its course. This is no longer the election. The US election was over on Nov 4. What we are now seeing are the death throws of a failed experiment which needs to be consigned to history asap.

We probably need two new ones. One to discuss the Biden Presidency and another to discuss the future of the Republican Party post-Trump. Whether we need a third to discuss how Trump is behaving in the weeks before he gets his coat is another possibility. I suppose they could all be lumped together under a general heading, but the election is a done deal.

The idea of secession being either possible, wise, practical or desirable for anyone, including ultra-conservative Republicans is preposterous.

It's completely unnecessary too. The individual states have more than enough power in their own hands to ensure that the way of life that the majority of their citizens prefer is delivered to them and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

With a conservative SCOTUS in place for decades to come the trend may well still be the other way at a federal level. So I don't see too many heavy gun controls on the horizon nor any extension of abortion rights, indeed more probably a rearguard action to retain those that now exist. The only area I see some genuine progress happening is with healthcare and a very, very slow move towards convincing people that a universal system is preferable. My guess is it will be done at State level to start with and then held up as a model when successful. Biden's priority will be to conquer the pandemic, by getting people to take it seriously and then accept vaccination. Everything else can wait.

This was a farce. A blatant attempt to truly steal an election which not only deserved to fail, but deserves to be condemned by everyone who treasures fairness above party politics.

True. When you give someone a lifetime government appointment, they have remarkably little incentive to help you destroy that government. Trump has spent his whole adult life using the court systems to threaten people but he's now out of his depth. He'll soon be consumed by legal issues.

Well, I don't see how Trump wins from here.

However, while you take your pleasure in mockery, let's not forget your mockery of Tux over Bitcoin....something you own yourself.

He's doing rather well at the moment.

One of the problems with life is the tendency to see everything through our own lens without acknowledgement that we can never have the full picture.

That isn't a criticism of any of us but rather a statement that we all project our attitudes and personalities onto the events we interpret before us....it's unavoidable.

However, there are some who are better at taking the balance of a situation than others.

I think with Trump some get overly fixated upon him and think that he just somehow cheated/tricked/lucked his way to president...Trump increased his votes this election...in my view at least, polarisation won't be reducing.....The emergence of Trump was a symptom of division, not its creation.

Time will reveal I guess.
