on the other hand, the Aussie wicket keeper noticed Bairstow had a tendency to leave his crease early for the previous few overs. He saw an opportunity and capitalised on Bairstow's casual approach, might be another way of looking at it.

We lost by just 43 runs and Bairstow who was our batsman of the year last year was out for 10.

It's quite conceivable that he could have got a half century which means that we would have won so it's a shame that the whole match was decided by an unsportsmanlike gesture

Whereas in football, where it happens all the time, it's never a shame; in fact it's widely celebrated.

It’s a shame Crawley, Pope, Root or Brook, who got less than 30 between them didn’t contribute more, then the whole incident might not have been such an issue.

OK, so in specific terms, why was he out?

You know why he was out. I'm sorry, I genuinely don't understand the question.

That's a fair way of looking at it.
It's like "Mankading" where the non-striker is run out by the bowler, although in that case the batsman is trying to gain an advantage which Bairstow wasn't. It seems unsporting but is within the laws.
Would Bairstow have done the same thing to Steve Smith? I suspect he would.
Personally I think it's unsporting to bowl bouncers at a number 11 rather than look for an easy wicket but that happens frequently.

Cricket needs to work on its rules. Catching has become unclear and unsporting behaviour is as much as ever - I don't agree with the mankad, nor Barstow's type of dismissal. I thought it interesting that he clearly makes his ground and both umpires are walking away. On the other hand, also interesting that Carey did it almost instantaneously. Almost - there is a thinking pause.
I think people have a point when they say Cummins could have withdrawn the appeal.
I've seen the same not given in matches I've played. I did it once as a slip fielder and was just laughed at and the game continued. Yes, I'm over competitive - I hear it all the time. And that's what this was. The Aussies with ball tampering and win at all costs are not helping the game. Far from it - it's dying out there as much as anywhere else, except the sub continent 20/20. Winning is all well and good but it shouldn't come at a price ala Man U under Ferguson. The Aussies are probably worse cheats and have been called out and caught more often than Rooney's had grannies.

It's also conceivable that Stokes would not have attacked quite so much had Bairstow been alongside him, and may have gotten out himself for a lot less.

It is all distracting from the real issue, and giving us an excuse as to why we were hard done by. It's all so England (in all sport!). Up to that point Australia were giving us a lesson in Test Cricket; Adapting to the situation and demonstrating how to play. Would we have gone Short if it wasn't already tried so successfully by the Aussies?

'Bazball' is simply playing 50 over cricket over 2 innings. It might be exciting and will give the odd good win, but Test Cricket it is not.

As a slight aside, I know a friend of mine waited nearly 20 years on the waiting list to join the MCC. (he didn't pull any strings). He was so ecstatic when he got membership, that he went to as many events as possible. I even went as his guest to an evening of dinning, and I can say the MCC members I met were a very different breed to the working class.
So when I see 'young' MCC members giving grief (and some who look old enough to know better), it makes me wonder. The young 'uns can't be full members, as they'd know how to behave and wouldn't risk their membership.

So, for the MCC to say they've suspended members pending an investigation is quite a massive step. Losing your membership and being out of the MCC would be almost life-changing for a few.

He may have but given the option of potentially making the series 1-1 rather than 0-2 he might have been happy to take the wicket.

Yes, but what I'm getting at is why, as suggested, you cannot change the rules.

Change it how? The rule states that an over is over when the umpire calls over and you can't get clearer than that
