on the other hand, the Aussie wicket keeper noticed Bairstow had a tendency to leave his crease early for the previous few overs. He saw an opportunity and capitalised on Bairstow's casual approach, might be another way of looking at it. Edited by Forest Hillbilly (03 Jul 2023 9.55am)

OK, so in specific terms, why was he out? You know why he was out. I'm sorry, I genuinely don't understand the question.

That's a fair way of looking at it. Cricket needs to work on its rules. Catching has become unclear and unsporting behaviour is as much as ever - I don't agree with the mankad, nor Barstow's type of dismissal. I thought it interesting that he clearly makes his ground and both umpires are walking away. On the other hand, also interesting that Carey did it almost instantaneously. Almost - there is a thinking pause.

It is all distracting from the real issue, and giving us an excuse as to why we were hard done by. It's all so England (in all sport!). Up to that point Australia were giving us a lesson in Test Cricket; Adapting to the situation and demonstrating how to play. Would we have gone Short if it wasn't already tried so successfully by the Aussies? 'Bazball' is simply playing 50 over cricket over 2 innings. It might be exciting and will give the odd good win, but Test Cricket it is not.

As a slight aside, I know a friend of mine waited nearly 20 years on the waiting list to join the MCC. (he didn't pull any strings). He was so ecstatic when he got membership, that he went to as many events as possible. I even went as his guest to an evening of dinning, and I can say the MCC members I met were a very different breed to the working class. So, for the MCC to say they've suspended members pending an investigation is quite a massive step. Losing your membership and being out of the MCC would be almost life-changing for a few.

Yes, but what I'm getting at is why, as suggested, you cannot change the rules. Change it how? The rule states that an over is over when the umpire calls over and you can't get clearer than that
