Lessons from the game, The point about Eze is interesting as I always thought he was a right sided player but it appears he is more comfortable on the left.

You would expect an attacking minded defender to be comfortable doing what he normally does in getting forward whilst still defending but from a more advanced position. He looked totally lost however and ended up doing neither. A midfielder he is not.

A good team is built around a solid spine. Guita is a very good goalkeeper, but look what he has in front of him. Our central defenders - whatever the ever changing combination is - are past it. It showed up again tonight, no pressure on the ball for Leeds first goal. Luka in midfield. A shadow of the player he was three years ago. Now a liability in possession and the only thing consistent in his game is a yellow card. Up front Benteke, Bats don't retain the ball nor are they a goal threat. Too soon to evaluate Mateta, but tonight will have given him a glimpse of what it takes and he's got his work cut out if he's going to make it in this league. As for the game, we saw the best of Leeds with their high press and energy levels. I thought we also saw the other side of their game - they did give us room to play in but our players failed to make the most of those opportunities and we ended up a poor second. Of course Hodgson is coming in for the inevitable post defeat bashing despite actually trying some new ideas and giving Mateta his debut. Perform like tonight at the Amex in 2 weeks time, and I dread to think what this board will be like. The time has come for him to be dropped. He has 1 strength and that’s shot stopping from close range. His kicking game is atrocious and he is awful under crosses. There is no harm with getting Butland in for a stint.

To me, Mitchell does not look ready. If PVA is off which I think is likely we need another LB option. I am unsure if TM is as good as we hoped but he has time. One thing he can do is cross a ball though.

I have spoken to full-backs with attacking prowess and they have told me it is a different dynamic advancing forward from full-back with the play in front of them. I believe it was Ashley Cole who mentioned similar sentiments and he was a striker in the Arsenal academy who filled-in at left-back due to an injury and stayed in this position.

Roy's thinking was too keep the side that did well against Newcastle but if it had not been woeful finishing by them we would of lost possibly badly. 21 shots in the game. Leeds were different, converting a few but again if their finishing had been better we would of got a real pasting. Agree about the central defence, beginning to show it's age whichever 2 goes in there.
