One thing that struck me having watched the highlights time and again since Saturday - and it strikes me nearly every game I might add - is the space that our full backs give to their wide players.

I understand what you are stating regarding full-backs being drawn to the middle, however sometimes teams are organised so that there is little space to play through the middle and as such are content to allow spaces on the flanks believing that they can defend crosses against strikers whose prowess is not their aerial threat.Carroll wasn't playing so maybe our full backs were instructed to play more centrally to give more protection through the middle.

Agreed to an extent, however the space available to run into in this case extended right into the box and he could have taken on the ball and shot himself, but opted to cross. I can't agree as a rule that defences should play narrow. If you look at the number of goals scored at this level, there is a high number being scored by wingers/wing backs cutting the ball back from out wide for strikers to run onto. Did we perhaps miss Sakho? Whenever Sakho has played, Ward has appeared to play better and is that because Sakho is telling him where to go? I really don't know the answer to that question without analysing the games in which they have both started, but have definitely seen an improvement in Ward when he is on the pitch.

Just add that you can make a player go in one direction or stay on one foot by staying on the other side of centre you speak of. Makes it easier to time your tackle. Happens all the time outside of the area, and will do to our players but apparently it's not an option for our players. Not sure on your player ratings. Bl00dy bell they tight. I dread to think what you'd give West Ham players. Maybe I'd have to know what you give our players right after another game to compare but blimey they're low. Wouldn't go down well on here so you'd expect some censoring.
