It will make a change from leafing through your old copies of Spare Rib I suppose.

The government cannot stop me from standing in front of the statue of Sam Houston (who stepped down from his post rather than join the Confederacy) holding a banner that says "All Nazis are disgusting, racists pigs!"

Now, the Nazis have the option to go to court to sue for an injunction (in advance) or defamation (after the fact) if they think I'm wrong. They can show up and counter my opinion directly at the time, too. But in court they have to show good cause as to why my opinion needs to be suppressed; otherwise, I'm free to continue.

It's why, for example, someone like Trump could continue to claim for years that Obama was born in Kenya and that he can prove it - without actually proving it. Now, Obama could have taken him to court (on his own behalf, not the government's) to get an injunction but, being the sitting President at the time, it would've looked horrible. So he released his full birth certificate, mocked Trump mercilessly about it to his face [Link] and let it go. Because there are some court fights you just can't win, even if you win.

It's not a perfect system by any stretch, but I think we're better off not having the sitting government decide what can and can't be talked about. More-so now than ever.

Well explained.

If you come to a fork in the road, take it.

Yeah, it was difficult, as a young man...... trying to choke the chicken to overty serious politically correct unwashed women with no make up.

But I pulled it off.....It's surprising what will power can do.

The 'land of the free'. There are downsides to everything but overall I think America have this area pretty well balanced then.

I used to roll my eyes when every American cop show on the telly had characters bleating about their constitutional rights. Having lived here for 23 years, I have become aware of the absolute genius of the U.S. Constitution. Now, it wasn't perfect, which is why the original authors and others went back and added the first 10 amendments - known collectively as the "Bill of Rights' - that enshrined the freedoms (from government interference) that we are talking about here.

Interestingly, this was mostly driven by a desire to avoid backsliding into a "what I say goes" kind of rule from which they'd just extricated themselves. Hence all the protections around speech, religion and assembly. The intent was for this to be a nation governed by laws, not by men.

Given how complicated the world was and is, it's amazing to me that this document still holds up. Now, there are constant debates about interpretation but, for the most part, they made the language so clean and unequivocal that it's hard to f*** it up (although I - and many others - think they messed up over gun rights in the 2nd amendment but that's a ship that sailed a long time ago).

So the Constitution protects such diverse things as being a Nazi, making p***. owning guns and having an abortion. There are lots of people who disagree passionately with those rights, but rights they are because the Constitution says so.

Take a quick look at the Bill of Rights - each one is maybe two or three sentences but they speak volumes towards keeping everyone out of everyone else's business - especially the government. [Link]

We don't do possession; we do defense and attack. Everything else is just wa**ing with a football.

My posts are independent of newspapers, I don't read any (subscribe to the Spectator though, which I recommend). Which newspapers do you think I should read?

I am neither your mentor nor do I work as a salesman for WH Smith.

I do recommend a healthy, balanced diet with lots of variety. It tends to prevent constipation.

Why do you tell me what you think I shouldn't post then?

I don't. If I did I would have a full time job given your volume of posts.

I made a general comment that you are single dimensional and boring and that the effect of your multiple similar posts isn't doing this site and the individuals on it any good.

I will now further add that a reason for my frustration is relentless negativity. I don't remember you celebrating anything or anyone.

Really? I could have sworn you posted "It is you and one other person that has ruined Nick's posts for the rest of us. By constantly blindly attacking 'the left', whatever that means, you have become a damned nuisance. Get a life, think independently and lay off with all this party political nonsense. Stop forcing others into defending their positions ad nauseum."
(I'll make an effort to find something in our ever tightening, new puritan, progressive society to 'celebrate'. Would also help if you could tell me which party I am posting political nonsense in support of.)

When I see you celebrate I shall certainly try to celebrate with you. As long as you aren't celebrating someone else's misfortune.

Are we all enjoying the glorious cultural revolution, comrades? Is it everything we dreamed it would be?

The people on here that supported the path these savages are now going down should hang their f***ing heads in shame. You disgust me.

Ahh the Old actions of a few idiots mean the rest are culpable line.

That's like me saying you are responsible for the white supremacist bloke who drove the car into the crowd because he thought the statue should stay like what you do.

Dave I expect less bombast and more reason from you in future.
