First half of last season and before I would have agreed with every word. However, there has been a marked improvement in PVA's defensive awareness started under Allardyce and carried on by Moyes. No matter though as the proof of the pudding will be in the eating!
Back end of last season I agree, but this season definitely not! You clearly haven't watched much of us. He's totally reverted to type again and has been at fault for goals every week recently.

Very good going forward as an overlapping fullback and always chips in with a few goals and assists, but defensively he is absolutely shocking. Constantly out of position, caught ball watching all the time and often seen jogging back into position after needlessly giving away possession in a bad position. If you have watched a lot of us this season (It's painful, believe me haha) you will realise that he alone has been responsible for at least half of the goals we have conceded this season. I think Big Sam knows his defensive weaknesses and will,,address .them pretty quickly. I hope!

OK thanks, you've made your point, and clearly Allardyce doesn't know what the fcuk he's doing, so we'll see you in the Championship

That Sunderland team improved considerably under Allardyce's tutelage towards the end of last season and now that he's not there any more they're s***e again. So I don't have a problem with him getting in players he worked with at Sunderland at that time, whereas when Pardew did it with Newcastle players that was a different matter.

If that's the case (and I accept it seems to be quite a common narrative among Sunderland fans), then we should be very optimistic. Because pretty much every one admits he became much more solid (while still offering a very significant threat going forward) for the back-end of last season i.e. when BFS was their manager. You know, the same BFS who is now our manager. If he can get him to replicate that form then we've got a very good left back on our hands. Some stuff I have seen suggests some of that improvement was down to supporting players, but we'll just have to wait and see. Whatever the fee actually turns out to be, it is clearly not a small amount but it could end up being a good deal all round.

Plain and simple clubs do not usually let a player go in January without knowing 100% that they have a replacement lined up. How many times have we heard that this player was due to go here and this player due to come to us from there...only for the deal to collapse because a replacement couldn't be found. Its like the housing market...you can agree a price and sign the mortgage forms but if someone in the chain can't find a house they don't move out and the whole deal is off or delayed. How many times have we seen clubs make a late bid for a player and the other club says the fee is ok but we won't have time to buy a replacement. Its just common sense but there is a massive lack of that from fans during a transfer window. Do you think it's just a coincidence that Sunderland seem to be signing a left back the same day they are selling one???

If he can replicate that, and its a very big if, then he could turn out to be a decent signing for you's. He was better last season, but still there were major flaws that were glossed over because the team started winning. Personally I'm a little torn over the transfer tbh. I probably would have liked to have kept him, but if the reported £14 million is true then we would have been daft not to accept it. Apparently he'd become quite a disruptive influence in the dressing room lately and isn't the most liked of players, so maybe this deal might be the best for all concerned.
