The full back situation has already been debated at length. But, to reiterate, when you have a budget you have to assess and prioritise how you spend it. You and I may see the full back positions as in desperate need of an upgrade, but clearly Palace don't.

I'm not going to pretend that I foresaw major expenditure on another goalkeeper, but given Guaitas departure, we needed another senior player in that position.

Lerma is already proving to look like a shrewd signing.

Holding is an upgrade on Tompkins as cover at centre back.

I'm as disappointed as anyone that we didn't land a striker. Ekitike apparently wanted to come but PSG only wanted to sell and not loan. So the question is could we have used the Henderson money to pay for Ekitike....I think that money had already been committed on the assumption that we could get Ekitike on loan - who knows ?

On a positive note, we still have Franca to come into the equation and Olise. And we didn't lose ( as I thought we surely would ) one of our major playing assets.

Franca is the only possible bright light in all of this. Let’s hope he is as good as we are told.

I don’t really subscribe to the ‘losing’ of assets. If players are under decent contracts, which all of our best players currently are then the club always has the option of saying no. If we did decide to sell then that is a strategy decision and you would hope the money is reinvested in the playing staff. As they reach the end of their contracts that’s when you start to worry about losing them without reasonable compensation.

Exactly - the club said ' no '.

The easy option would to have cashed in.

Roy didn't change his mind but he acted diplomatically when he realised that needing a winger and striker all he was given was yet another central defender, another keeper and a young kid who could well be the next Sorloth for all we know.

Any manager other than faithful Roy would probably hand in their notice today

Roy knows he kept his best players, despite the interest in them. Keeping Eze and Olise rather than replacing them with an unknown foreigner is the preferable option.

The other side of the coin.

This looks like clear preparation for a departure of one of our first choice CBs in the next window - giving Hall time to be rotated in (cup games etc). It is the only way we can avoid disruption to the squad and remain financially viable.

I'd expect more of the same over coming years.

Who is "Palace" I wonder. Is it the manager who was quoted as saying that he needed several more players or did the chairman decide what was needed and the priorities.

We have Parish setting the budget, Freedman as Director of Football dictates the strategy in terms of players/transfers. Roy wanted more reinforcements I'm sure - don't most managers ?

All we can do is make assumptions - and I'm assuming that we didn't have the budget or appetite to sign Ekitike permanently. So PSG kept him but still signed another striker for £76m - did they sell anyone else to comply with FFP ?

I think the signing of Holding was an opportunity that came along at short notice. At £4m I would say that's a good investment.

And to top it all, we re-employed a 76 year old to hold the fort for just one season more.
No knocking Roy, he knows the score and is competent enough to guide us to another 12th place finish.
Hey, he said it's time to aim for a top 10 finish this season, maybe there is some hope after all.

Exactly just another issue the club couldn't be assed, addressing, just keep Roy, we will worry about it next year.

The disappointment of course is no attacking signings.
....

My guess, and it's only a guess, is that Parish and co. have decided that we have enough to finish 17th or above but also they are still employing a very long term, strategic approach to everything. The core of now two very good GKs, Andersen/Guehi, Lerma/Doucoure & Eze/Olise still remains. I would suggest Franca is expected to be included in that cohort which would eventually make it 8 positions in the starting XI sorted, with everybody else just qualifying as padding to keep the team from catastrophe as we seek to expand the stadium.

If that anywhere near resembles reality it may be very good in the long run but very frustrating in the short term, which is where I expect a lot of people are tonight, have been previously and may well be in the future.

In any instance, COYP. My prediction for Wolves is either 0-0 or 1-1 but would be nice to have something to cheer off the back of this.

"Disappointment" is the word that sums up my feelings, especially when I read that Sinisterra has gone on loan to Bournemouth whereas our attempt at a loan for Ekitike was doomed from the start.

However, I think you have made a valid point about what we have as the spine of our 1st IX. Let's not forget that the Big boys were genuinely wanting to take most of them away but we refused to sell. Henderson has been told (or seems to think) that we are building something good which is why he wanted to come and fight for the no 1 spot with his good friend Johnstone.

What little business we have done has been decent. I've said elsewhere that I wonder whether DF has a list of targets and when they become available at the right price goes for them even if they are not the top priority in the window. We are the polar opposite of Forest who seem to go about hoovering up whatever they can find.

I read that PL clubs have spent £2.36 BILLION this window. Our share (excluding add-ons) is £36m so about 1.5%. That says a lot regarding the state of the playing field we're in.

But as you say COYP. I'm a little more optimistic than you re tomorrow's game, I think we'll have a narrow win.

Well, we've made the 'transfer window losers' article on Football365.

"There is much to be said for extending Michael Olise’s contract and keeping Eberechi Eze, Marc Guehi and Cheick Doucoure. But not replacing Wilfried Zaha, having one first-team left-back, entering another season with Joel Ward as a starter and having three largely blunt strikers to choose from says rather a lot more. Mainly about how just staying up is the target for yet another season."

I'd agree. But do we need a 20m keeper? Utd replaced him with a c.7m player.

Just posted this on wrong thread....

I cannot fathom why with such wealthy shareholders (Harris and Blitzer) we dont have a raise of say £50m and dilute existing holders accordingly.
Say we value the club at £200m and raise £50m, that would dilute existing holders by 20%. (Newcastle was bought for £300m)
So if H&B put the money in it will give them 20% increase and the remaining shareholders will decrease (or participate).
If no other holders participate that would give them control eg 36% existing plus 20% = 56%
The others would reduce by 20% which would suit Eagle football who anyway want to invest in Chelsea and therefore need to reduce their stake by 10% down to sub 30%.
Bringing in £50m would have given us sufficient funds to have brought in two decent wing backs and a striker.
Add them to the players we have and with a fair wind that would have given us a squad equipped for european competition.
This would significantly add value to the club and fulfil what so many on here are stating as the needed requirement to push on.
To hell with the stadium. That is a massive overhead and turbulence which at this stage we can really do without. The ROI on the new stand is minimal compared to its inevitable cost (min. £150m).
Any of you accountants got a view on this?
