Can't agree more than with this Willo. The way the fixture list panned out means Parish was on a hiding to nothing. Sack Vieira and you've done it before the 'easier' fixtures come along. Stick and we don't win the next three or four and Parish gets it for not sacking him earlier. However, where I do feel the board is culpable is that they must have seen the gaping holes in the squad and done nothing to address it. If we had bought another 3 or so players in the summer to help in the problem positions, I doubt we would be talking about 1 win in 16. I recall having a tipple in a local Public House and had a conversation with a charming gentleman who is a supporter of Liverpool.

Correct. While the two players have not been identified, it is known that neither were involved in the squad for the Fulham game as a result of the incident. The line up for that game was: Palace: Guaita (GK), Clyne (Ward, 67), Tomkins, Andersen, Mitchell, Doucouré (Milivojevic, 83), Eze (Richards, 60), Schlupp (Riedewald, 83), Ayew, Zaha, Olise (Hughes, 83). Subs not used: Butland (GK), Edouard, Ebiowei, Gordon. Therefore, the two players were most likely Guehi and Mateta, both of whom returned to the side for the following game. That is speculation on my part, but informed speculation nevertheless. Well Guehi was suspended that game as he had amassed 5 yellow cards, so maybe just speculation

Whether you are for or against his appointment as a 'Red Adair' to save us from relegation we now have to concentrate on the final 10 games. One factor that condemns Vieira are the stats regarding our lack of fitness, the worse of all 20 clubs. Maybe the team remembers the work rate of Gallagher, left him to get on with it and then forgot he had gone. Hodgson has inherited a reasonable defence and some talented players but little else. His task is to make the midfield creative and, somehow, instill some finishing ability. At the moment Edouard and Mateta are like lost sheep and Ayew is the most unproductive No.9 we've ever had. I am certain that any decent manager should be able to quickly get the players to gel and win the ten points we need to survive and Hodgson, despite his apparent mild manner, is that man. Just the one proviso - he remembers that many of his old favourites are now past their prime and he takes advice from McCarthy who is more up to speed with the squad.

If I were Guehi I'd deck Mateta for going in hard on a youngster in a heartbeat. After all, he barely goes in on anyone during games. Useless f***er. And if it was Mateta taking a swing at Guehi then the skipper could at least rest assured that the useless plank would miss. This type of altercation takes place all the time up and down the land. My only concern would be if either it wasn't happening at Palace, or if either player was left out of a squad when fit because of it.

In 2017 when he joined after the FdB debacle he managed 9 points from 10 games, losing the first 3. Personally feel we were in a worse position then, than now in terms of squad morale/confidence, although not in terms of time. Also under the circumstances couldn't see anyone else of managerial note coming in just for 10 games at the end of a season. COYP !!

Dear god this is a bloody nightmare... however here is my 10 cents worth. PV was just not interested and looked clueless at the end. I've not missed a minute of his time as a manager and it was like he checked out after the World Cup. I run a business not big but big enough that if I am not on top of things then the guys working for me can go a bit off plan and the whole thing starts to break down. It is madness to think that things will be working like a well oiled machine if the head of that machine is not doing there job. The only surprise for me was that he was such a great player, that you would think he would not allow those standards to drop. That said how many great players turn into great managers... this is a cliche for a reason. On to Roy. I hated watching Palace at the end of Roys last stint but nobody can argue that he did exactly what he was there to do. Got us punching well above our weight and most of the time he was in charge we were easily safe in the league. I would reflect on his time with us and Fulham rather than dwelling on the Watford stint. Watching us since the World Cup has been even more painful than the last season or so with Roy. It became a similar style but my view it was never implemented as well as Roys team and the players looked lost most of the time, devoid of confidence and fitness. With the games we have coming up, on paper we should be fine with Roy, all he has to do is get players he mostly knows to buy into the fight, the newer players will then get on board and hopefully we will be safe before the last couple of games. If Parish had waited until after the first couple of games agains those around us and we lost then I think it would have been too late so I think there was no choice. Moving forwards, It is hard to see where we go. The funds are not there, After PV and FDB do we have to accept that we will never get this flowing style of football Palace and on our budget? As hard as it is to accept, Liverpool and Man City we ain't. I totally agree with each of your points. My only observation is on your point about whether we will see a flowing style of football at Palace, a subject I am one of many to post about in recent years. On one hand, if we accept that we have a lower mid-table budget (which the facts and figures make clear is the case) then playing open football is probably not realistic. On the other hand, in buying Guehi, Eze, Olise and (to a point) Andersen we have perhaps signified an intention to play better football, even if only to make those individuals more marketable. Though they have improved defensively this year, the two centre-backs in particular are probably better at passing than defending. Those signings felt like a commitment to possession football; certainly, they are a very different 'type' of centre-back than their predecessors. Edouard, Richards, Ahamada and Docoure are also at least around the right age to have sell-on value, and are probably all players that would do better in a footballing side. We seem to be staying clear of grizzled veterans and limited journeymen in recent windows. Two things occur to me: Fistly, without at least one good centre-forward who can finish and who makes well-timed and dangerous movements in build-up play, it becomes harder for us to pass well, and any good football we do play often goes to waste. That is the position where we really need to get lucky in the market, or maybe get a tune out of Edouard (good luck with that Roy). If not, the hope of playing better stuff will never materialise. Secondly, I have just begun to wonder whether Vieria was sacked because Parish felt he wasn't delivering on some core objective to play good football, rather than because of the points total. Obviously, Roy isn't the answer if so, but he's only here for the very short term. I just wonder if Parish and Freedman, having invested heavily in younger, footballing players in the hope of showcasing them before selling them on for big money, were pissed off to see Vieria playing defensive, turgid stuff anyway? That could ruin their plans to sell Eze or Olise for north of £40m in the next two years before reinvesting in more young players with potential. That might be a cause of friction leading to poor relationships, and ultimately a parting of ways? Perhaps there is, in fact, such a commitment to better football that Vieria's inability to produce it has led to his departure? He'd be one of very, very few Palace managers to be sacked for playing defensively if so, but then between the market and the academy, we've never invested as much in sellable, skillful young footballers before. Interesting how many posters think we will get relegated because of/despite of Roy, because the squad will/won't adapt to his style, his style is bad, he ist too old/(Ok, I leave this out) the squad is still the same as before, the change came too early/too late etc etc. In contrast, as soon as we play teams after a change of managers, some posters quickly consider them as invincible for the next weeks, because of the "manager effect" or whatever you call it. Probably this even would happen if I turn up as the new manager of the opponent.

I agree that the club under its present owners has no ambition beyond spending as little as possible to survive in the PL while lining the owner's pockets, but Roy's arrival is surely unrelated to that problem.

It’s the ultimate interview question isn’t it? Q. Why do you want to work here? At this moment in time I refuse to believe Roy has no passion for football or Palace, even if it’s only a little. As for his remuneration, if he keeps palace up he’s worth the sum total of the players and board x10 as far as I’m concerned. Im really not bothered by nor care about it.
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

Well, I've slept on it, after feeling bitterly dissapointed, a little angry and rather a lot resigned to relegation... and not much has changed. I was one that had come round to thinking that PV was showing signs of running out of ideas. And from SP's viewpoint, just before a 2 week break was the last opportunity to make that change, and he made a tough decision to get rid. A fair enough decision based on this years record. Of course I'll support Hodgson during this stint, - it's not his fault. He's exactly the type of person to accept the distress call from his boyhood club. But literally anyone would have a been better appointment. Someone who could ask something different of the players. As it is I can see more of the same of PV's final tactics (which were edging closer to RH's by the end) I hope he does well and proves me wrong. morover, I hope West Ham, Forest ,Bournemouth So'ton, leicester and leeds don't get a point in the Last 10 games ! You been asleep for two days. That’s a coma
