Interesting debate following on from what has been an excellent and enjoyable summer of cricket. Shame I am not looking forward to next summer with so much relish with the Hundred making its bow. I haven’t spoken to anyone yet who is actually looking forward to its inception or can be bothered with it. Cant really argue with any of that. Would add in Foakes as a proper keeper in the squad too.

Yep, good suggestions from both of you. Pope should probably have played this summer...Sibley has earned his tour place and I've always rated Hain. As for Foakes, he never deserved to be dropped in the first place. He's made of the right stuff and has the talent. Edited by Stirlingsays (16 Sep 2019 10.39am)

Interesting debate re the wicketkeeper. Personally I think we have seen the best of Butler when freed up to tee off with the tail. For me his glovework is good enough and he should bat 7. If he doesn't bat 7 he's not good enough as a specialist batsmen to warrant a place top 6.

Unless it is restored to terrestrial I think cricket will not improve its audience. Remember watching John Player League on Sundays, all the test matches and NatWest Trophy. People are not going to have Pay TV just to watch the occasional cricket match. Glenn McGrath saying the same in Oz...

As a kid I used to love watching the sunday league (especially as Kent were very successful during the 70's). I stopped watching once I started playing for the adults team at the age of 12/13.

I recall the days when the only limited overs matches broadcast were on sundays between a county side and the ‘International cavaliers’ made up of a variety of players from different counties.

I see Dom Sibley is currently undefeated on 156 in the latest championship fixture. This guys has scored well over 1000 championship runs at an average of approaching 60. No mean feat given most matches are played at the beginning and end of the summer. He has to be on the plane to NZ.

I don't know how relevant his score is as not only is it against the already relegated Notts but two of their players also scored centuries with Stephen Mullaney top scoring with 179

Any score against an attack including Ravi Ashwin has to be taken seriously. Over 8 hours batting even on a road takes some powers of concentration. Exactly what England's top order is lacking currently.

Although I still don't believe that scoring freely against a side that is already relegated and possibly are just going through the motions should count for a great deal I do agree with you that it's time he was given a chance with England to see whether he can make the step up
