Rumpole, Starmer, whilst a very effective barrister, would have his trousers removed and be assuming the position before he even realised what was going on, if he was in Brussels. This is politics, not the ordered, genteel, Old Bailey. Tusk and Drunker would rip him new one. Davis is a warhorse. Not elegant but bloody effective in the right circumstances. Why have you got such a boner for Kier?

More prevalent than you'd think. Mentioning that budget cuts do nothing to alleviate or break the vicious circle you allude to (quite correctly) nor does a pish poor social services because what staff are left are massively overstretched is not point scoring. It's a fact that needs to be faced and dealt with by whoever is in Government. At the moment it's not far from breaking point. Labour did nothing to fix any of this so why keep on about it?

Fair enough. I respect that. But I'd rather someone negotiating that is calm under pressure. May has shown herself to be a chocolate teapot too often IMHO. There's only 1 t in Gusset. He wasn't that calm on Radio 4 this morning when he didn't have a clue as to how much his latest 'let's buy some more votes with some benefit promises' pitch would cost.
We have now sunk to a depth at which the restatement of the obvious is the first duty of intelligent men. [Orwell] |

Well for one social services have struggled for years and years,so you can't just blame this government for that.

The only thing I really remember him ever doing is getting his arse handed to him by Cameron in the leadership election...

Why have you got such a boner for Kier? I suspect the more pertinent question might be,are you actually aware you have no idea what you are talking about? The Bar is a tried and tested preparation for good politicians. For example,22% of Conservative MP's have a legal background. Plus Starmer has been DPP and head of the CPS,a distinctly ungenteel job. I suspect he would in fact take your boy Mr D to pieces in a brain and nous not bluster and brawn contest that wouldn't go the distance.. That's the same DD who showed his political talents by losing a Tory leadership campaign he was favourite to win in 2005 by running a naff campaign epitomised by a picture with two women wearing tight T-shirts saying: Its DD for me. Having worked at the House of Commons and as a lawyer,I might be reasonably placed to venture the opinion (just an opinion)that the Bar is every bit as tough and mucky a cesspit for "operators" to succeed in as parliament. Any meaningful resemblance between Rumpole (set 30 plus years ago anyway)and day to day litigation lawyer life exists IMHO only in the minds of those who engage in fantasy based on reading novels and/or watching TV. Have you ever actually worked as/at either? Edited by legaleagle (30 May 2017 10.43pm)

Obviously we shouldn't read too much in to these things but... A Yougov poll now has the Tories failing to get a majority. Hard to imagine anyone would jump in to bed with them on the manifesto they've got, so... Corbyn 4 No.10?

Is it me or is Jezza coming across a bit less barmy recently? I predict a big turnout and much tactical voting. Would serve Terehhsa right if her nipping out for a cheeky snap election backfired Edited by Mapletree (30 May 2017 10.55pm)

I think his team are running a good campaign and he's in his element campaigning setting more of his own agenda ,and where election law requires an equal platform on TV neutralising an incumbent government's usual advantage....and people are perhaps realising that for all his faults its a bit naff that he gets monstered so regularly by much of the press whereas the singularly uninspiring Mrs May, who has at least as many faults if not many more, doesn't. Also, the Tories strategy of making it a Brexit election hasn't worked. Brexit ain't an issue for many now since they take it as a given. To the extent many (non fundamentalists) want it,they don't necessarily want a hard Brexit, Expect Lynton Crosby to get seriously down and dirty in the next 9 days.
