Missing out on Armstrong is not a bad thing in my view. You take last season out of his stats, and he’s had a pretty average career. He might be entering his prime, or it might have been a fluke. Either way it needs to have been a deal that made sense, and not many strikers can make that step up into the prem. The number quoted for a player in the champ, in the last year of his contract were a little spicy IMO

Pick him up for sub 10mil and it’s a gamble worth taking, 15-20mil and it could be an expensive mistake.

Isn't $15m the buy-now price for Mateta? AA would be a bargain by that yardstick.

If we played to AA's strengths and got it to his feet in the area plenty, I think he'd do alright in the Prem. However, he could easily end up an expensive Bamford mark II for us if we continue to play the way we have for the last 2 or 3 years.

That's unlikely from what we've seen of PV's approach so far. However, I'm not full of regret that AA has gone to Soton. Overhyped in my opinion.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

Like a number of others I would have liked AA at the right price and the right price was nearer £10m than £20m. As I said elsewhere, So'ton's need was greater than ours and so it's no surprise that they blinked first and offered a figure that Blackburn were prepared to accept. Also, we have greater needs in other positions, especially out wide.

It's a reflection on the current market that £20m is probably a reasonable price for a striker that might have potential to be a success for a club or our status in the premiership. Look at how much Brewster Solanke, Adams etc cost.

Given his current contract we might get him a bit cheaper.

The likes of Abraham will cost you £50m. We don't have the finance to get him.

The only way forward is to keep taking punts on the likes of Gayle, Sorloth, and Armstrong and similar for around £10 to £20m each.

We pretty much need to accept that these transfers are a bit of a risk but every few years you might find an AJ or Murray. Until then, finding a decent striker is an expensive & competitive activity.

I think he'll he a nice option up front as an alternative to Benteke and Mateta.

It's good we are getting into a position where we are now the club that these players from the championship want to go to.

Chamionship strikers dont cut it in the Prem. Gayle, Adams, Solanke, Maupay, Brewster - all recent ticket buys, but with terrible goal scoring records.

Play to Benteke's strengths, develop Rob Street and David Omilabu, look for good developing talent elsewhere at a reasonable price.

Will be interesting to see how many goals Armstrong and Toney score this season.

18 goals in 2 seasons in the Prem, 10 and 8, which is better on average than anybody at Palace over those seasons. If we can get a new striker who can average around 10 goals consistently for a number of seasons would be well pleased. 15 goal striker would be fantastic. At the moment for this season our best shot is Tekkers form continuing and/or Wilf firing like last season and/or Ayew the previous one and/or Mateta coming good. Fair few options there to be honest. AA looks like we were priced out if we we were interested in any case.

You need to also look at how many chances Maupay has missed. He was dropped last season by a team that could not find the net. OKish but not worth £20m

Fair point and you are right that you need to look at the service given as well. It will be interesting to see how Watkins fairs without Grealish causing havoc and gaining a lot of free kicks in dangerous positions etc. You are also right that most strikers from the Championship struggle but interestingly from last season of the top 10, only Fernandes, Bamford and Watkins hadn't played in the PL previous season, 1 abroad, 2 from the Championship. Those 2 probably boil down to the service around. I'm looking forward to having Eze, Olise etc.playing in the new team as hopefully we can follow suit.

Quite

You can add Adams here as well. 13 goals plus a decent number of assists in 42 appearances is tidy enough for a striker in the lower reaches. Southampton were of course absolutely cack for huge stretches of last season. No pens involved either.

Reality is that a striker who gets between 10-15 or even matches that on goals per game is viable in the PL. Watkins for instance who played for a strong Villa side "only" got 14 but I'd consider him a right prospect and good value from the Champo.

Age is also a factor here Maupay Adams and Watkins are all yet to reach football maturity. When you go into the Champo you are as often as not buying potential.

I think the Celtic lad Odsonne Édouard may have been a better option for us than Armstrong.

His goal scoring record is easily as good. He has a fantastic record for the French youth sides having scored 17 in 14 for the U21's and 43 in 51 across all the various French youth teams he has played in.

His record for assists is also very strong. When you add his assists to his goals tally he has contributed to 84 goals in 102 Scottish Prem games.

His record in Europe also holds up...15 goals in 39 games with a total goal contribution of 21 when including assists.

The main issue will be how good has the opposition been, how much would he cost and how much will his wages be coming from a big side like Celtic...but I would say his potential is there for all to be seen.

Another issue may be that he really is a centre forward and has had most of his success playing in this position.

Are people generally pleased or disappointed that he is not coming to Selhurst? I have to admit he wasn't on my radar last season (but I'm not always up to date with the Championship)?

He's being linked to Roma and Mourhino - out of our price bracket I'm next to certain if we weren't going for Armstrong

He’s in the last year of his contract at least…that may reduce his price but as we’ve seen with Armstrong, if there are several clubs chasing a player then it’s a sellers market.
