Here’s a sobering thought ahead of tomorrow. England has only ever lost one 2nd round (last 16) match in ‘playing time’. Also lost one on penalties, and failed to reach that stage twice. The full record:

1986 beat Paraguay 3-0
1990 beat Belgium 1-0 aet (FT 0-0)
1998 drew Argentina 2-2 aet (FT 2-2) lost 4-3 on pens
2002 beat Denmark 3-0
2006 beat Ecuador 1-0
2010 lost Germany 1-4

You could argue about the two losses that “we wuz robbed” (one sending-off, plus Paul Merton brought in as sub; one goal a yard over the line not given).

Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes)

If we brought Paul Merton on as a sub we deserve to lose....i hop he made them laugh.

Japan went for it in the final 2 minutes, caught on the break.

Cruel on them, they were excellent.

A fluke put the Belgians back in the match, then they exercised their height advantage and the Jap goalie flapped around.

Brazil v Belgium on Friday hope my nervous system is still intact for it.........

I would choose 1970 as the best World Cup, when Brazil confirmed the beautiful game.

I can't remember anything as good as this, however.

I agree. 1970 the best.

I registered my first 'World Cup balls' yesterday evening.

The Russian crowd belted out their anthem as you would expect, the BBC's Steve Wilson 'These soviets do great anthems'.

Christ! You haven’t been paying much attention. The commentary has been sh*te! “It’s England 2, Tunisia nil” was up there....during the Panama game.

The Russian national anthem is by far the best on earth. It’s miles better than all the rest. It makes me wish I’m Russian for a few minutes it’s that good. Passionate, inspiring, uplifting and never fails to raise the hairs on the back of your neck. I don’t know what it means but the music feels like it’s for something really treasured and important and so big in people’s lives. Truly brilliantly written stuff.

God England have done it to me again. It’s taken 4 games in but I’m counting on us winning. Fvck. But what a chance to go very very far.
