I think Wisbech E must have known this was coming so did what some footballers do got himself red carded for Christmas. On behalf of the Brexiteers on here we was robbed of the opportunity to pull him up.

Free trade deal is and always has been the most important issue and top priority. The price to be paid will be in the detail.

Plenty of ex-labour voters up for grab and with Brexit done, may not be keen on voting Conservative again. But Labour are hardly a valid choice either. Suspect that Starmer has most to fear, at least short term if Farage decides to stay in the game although it is not without risks. Thanks to all the retarded Second Referendum divs, Farage had a political challenge equivalent to shooting fish in a barrel. Could not have been easier. Even I cringed at times how simple it was for him. But having to formulate a wider and more encompassing political brand, different ball game altogether. We will see. People who know me would readily vouch that I am a fervent member of that "Hard Brexit Brigade" and have been nodding in agreement with the ERG. In terms of the actual deal, we have heard the headlines but I am reminded of the adage "The devil lies in the detail". Edited by Willo (25 Dec 2020 10.44am)

It looks the EU won on fishing but the UK won on much more.

It appears as though a compromise was reached. The EU wanted a 14 year transition, the UK offered 3 years but a settlement was reached at 5.5 years. For avoidance of doubt I have not seen the text of the whole deal but the above is what has been mentioned. Edited by Willo (25 Dec 2020 10.38am)

I had bet on Brexit not affecting me (in actual fact I was too lazy to get my Irish passport). It seems to have made no difference to me, so I'm relieved.

EU only get fisheries for a transitional period then they revert fully back to us from what I can see we have gained back everything we had lost regarding self governance borders courts ect whilst safe guarding the economy with little change to trade ect. A tell tale sign this is a good deal is that the remainers are hedging their frustrations at the fact we've opted out of that university scheme (were starting a new world wide one) so we have gone from no trade deal economic turmoil all alone in the world to free to make our own trade deals with pre existing trade continuing. We are the masters of our own destiny again so now onto CANZUK.

I do wonder if you might see Scottish waters coming under pressure? With Westminster deferring to Edinburgh? The SNP are full-on EU bitch boys and will do nothing to stop EU fishing fleets doing effectively what they want, which is potentially bad news for a supposedly 'National' movement. Could be some interesting plays up there. English waters are protected whilst the SNP do not have the guts to do similar to their own? But that is pure speculation. Like much else at the moment, hindsight is probably the only way we are ever going to be able to assess how much was gotten right and wrong. But there is certainly less fog now and I suspect that the EU will be playing catch up from now on in terms of recovering from this wretched Covid year, primarily because it moves so bloody slowly. The financial taps will be turned on long enough for the Germans and the Dutch to get back on track and then off they go again. Leaving the south of the EU in even more s***.

The EU were always going to use fishing rights to enable a free-trade deal. British fishing fleets have shrunk over the past 20 years, and of the fish caught,....most is exported to Europe. And at least we don't have Trump wanting us to import steroid-enhanced beef, or chlorine-washed chicken. Hoping Biden's team have a more pragmatic approach.
