They wanted their choice, so they had confidence in them.

I agree with them. They had to go through a convoluted process to achieve it, which failed and got us all in a mess.

Answer? Dump the process.

Another answer; don't trust politicians capable of such a drastic miscalculation let alone let them choose the Prime Minister.

Our economic failure is down to the Tories and it can be traced back a lot further than Liz Truss’s misinterventions. We need a stable and respected leader not a self indulgent Oaf.

The Tory party needs to reform the way it chooses its leader. It's absurd the way all this has been mishandled in recent weeks.

We have become an international laughing stock BUT it is just possible that international partners could rally round to support and address our weaknesses? It is not in their wider interests to see us broken and disheartened.

With support, good leadership and stable government I really believe we could rise from the ashes fairly quickly.

We live in a country with almost full employment. We experienced economic growth in the last quarter, albeit minor but still there. Everywhere I look I see packed bars and cafes.

Is everything rosy? Of course not. And inflation is a problem but these are not uniquely British problems.

This idea that we are in some kind of economic free-fall is ludicrous. And entirely manufactured.

It's certainly not rosy. You'd need to look further than the bars and cafes and at what type of employment people "enjoy". Have a glance at the NHS, schools, public services generally, foreign owned utilities, transport and banks, what people drive around in and consider ... what could we do better? You actually hit on the word in your last sentence.

The "Membership" will undoubtedly reinstall Boris. Boris would bring back all his "baggage" so that will detract from the job of stabilising the economy. The figs quoted on Newsnight earlier were Mordaunt 15 Sunak 32 Johnson 48. If Boris is reinstated it will be further evidence that the Tories have lost the plot.

How can Boris possibly be re-elected as he wouldn't be able to form a government unless all the people who resigned from post under him changed their minds

I believe there were 57 MPs who resigned so that leaves 308 who could potentially cast some of their votes for him or Willy Nilly? I hope he will show some common sense and not stand but you just don't know with these Tories.

The Boris bandwagon is gathering pace. CP had better increase the emoji re-order level or there will be supply issues.

That's what happens when tactical voting is seen to be necessary to get the result you want.

Remove the need for the tactical voting and a straightforward choice gets made.

For good governance it is essential that the MPs choose who leads them. They have to have confidence in them, if it gets lost then the PM loses their job. The idea that the membership has a role is ludicrous.

Tory voters will vote for LibDens at GE. Will get a Labour govt by ‘voting tactically’

The figures I have received this morning in terms of nominations :

Boris Johnson 51
Rishi Sunak 44
Penny Mordaunt 17

Some members I have spoken to are firmly in the Boris Johnson camp.

Does this surprise you Willo or do you think it was always a plan?
