Change for its own sake should be avoided, the arguement for retaining milage make sense, as its pragmatic to retain that system due to cost. In terms of weights and measures, phasing out the old with the new is progressive, for those of us who prefer rational number systems of measurement, over irrational ones.

Yes it did the job, as did pre-decimilisation money, but it effectively did so by requiring an entirely unnecessarily complex system of division, as opposed to a system of division you already knew.

Units of 10 are far more versitile for measurement, especially when dealing with consistant data, then imperial systems.

And problematically weighing in Lbs and Ozs generally means rounding off to the nearest oz or a nightmarish decent into fractions of an oz, rather than a more precise decimil figure.

I mean who doesn't miss the day of multiplying 2lb 3 1/5th oz by 2s 6p 2f.

Good old days those, where doing grocery shopping required such additional calculations.

I suppose there was some progressive sense to changing the old money then.

Definately, I think weights and measures was less important, in terms of shops and retail, which i guess is why the British Government relaxed its stance in 2009 of using both metric and imperial displays.

In the end metric was always going to win out, because its easier and more convenient, even if it lacks the poetry of the imperial system. Certainly a pint is more evocative than 0.66 of a litre.

Probably our generations will be the last to pay much interest in imperial measures. Do kids even learn imperial measures in school.

I remember being fascinated as a child with older currency and the difficulty of calculating values.

I only teach computing/ICT so I don't deal with mathematical measurements much outside of an interest in maths....but I've been recently helping a couple of year elevens with their maths exam revision....I'd say that they definitely know feet and inches, miles and pints....But outside of that imperial doesn't mean that much to them.....Mind you their understanding of metric wasn't much better.

I don't see metric taking over myself. I can see both systems being used in different areas simply because they are better for different situations.

The six foot measurement and either side of it is iconic and well understood.....1.8288 metres just doesn't cut it in comparison.

The pint is another good example.....So while metric is better for more detailed measurement it just isn't required or needed for classical British forms of measurement.

The mile measurement will also stick around....More probably because of a reluctance to replace road signs just for that reason. The length system for road signs isn't really improved by using metric....I can see that being with us long after we have gone.

Will be interesting to see.Australia did away with the old currency in 1966 and imperial measures etc between 1970-88.You go there now and no sign of any big deal problems or blows to the national fabric resulting from the move to a more logical and sensible system.

It appears I've got that wrong....They probably based that article upon Abbot bringing back British aspects of the honours system.

A capital for my name please Nick...What are you like!
