Ooooh! Do you think? You obviously still have a small club mentality, along with some of the others on here. No. This club needs to recognise that its best way forward is to be great on the pitch. That is what ultimately generates money. Selling a top player for big money will result in reinvesting it in players who are likely to be worse, or seeing it disappear into someone's pocket. Whether selling Guehi in particular will make a big impact on our performance is debatable, but it is about the message we send out to other clubs, fans and prospective signings. If we are ambitious, then we have to look like it. Surely the message we send to future prospective players is that they look at the situation with Olise and potentially Guehi and think that Palace is a great place to grow, learn your trade and move up in your football career. It means we are more likely to attract a higher standard of young player in the future, which is beneficial for everyone involved. Also, just to highlight that Leicester won the league - which to your point is the greatest you can be on the pitch - and they ended up being relegated. Long term success isn't defined in a singular season, you have to generate a more successful machine to be able to regularly compete and the hierarchy of our club are currently doing that. Whether fans like it or not, Rome wasn't built in a day unfortunately.

Enough to finance a couple of promising youngsters from Europe or the Championship. Replacing Olise is the more urgent problem right now. I'd heard that the sell on percentage to Chelsea is 20% and ONLY on the profit we make, NOT the overall selling price. Therefore, if we sold him for £60m, we would make £42m profit and therefore owe Chelsea £8.4m in sell-on fee.

When you hear ex-managers talk about players wanting to leave the general consensus is that once a player decides they want to leave there's not much you can do. Whether Guehi wants to leave with any degree of desperation is not clear. If you start chaining players to the goal posts it creates disharmony plus it sends out a bad message to any prospective signings. So for me it's less about whether the club can make money to reinvest and more about whether Guehi wants to stay at Palace. If he does then refuse the bids and get him to sign a new deal and if he doesn't then get the best deal we can and move on. Every club has to cross that bridge. Just look at Alvarez leaving Man City for Athletico.

Edited by Hrolf The Ganger (13 Aug 2024 1.38pm) If players felt they could never join a big club if they signed a contract then the best ones would all want one- or two-year deals. This is not to say the club should accept any offer, just that if the player says they want to leave and a club meets Palace's valuation then it seems counterproductive to force him to stay. Wilf stayed because no one came close to the club's valuation of him. I do understand your position and I agree that I'd rather watch great players than a pile of cash, but I think also you have to accept that the best players are always going to want to move onto bigger and better clubs. It's just a fact. The key is bigger clubs understanding that if they want our best players then they will pay top price. There are no bargains to be had.

I don't think with a narrow view. I see the bigger picture. City can do that. Liverpool can do that. Real Madrid can do that. Do you think we can do that? No, Of course we cant, 2023 Revenue Real Madrid 1Bn Euros, Mancity 826m, Liverpool 638m, Palace 218m, Get a grip, your making yourself look a bit Silly

In Premier League terms we are a small club - having a small club mentality is surely the right approach. I remember when Charlton thought they were bigger than they were and look at them now.

You are avoiding the simple truth. You are seeing straight past the simple reality. Big clubs can buy and sell top quality players. We can only sell top quality players and fill the gaps with prospects. How many can we sell and replace and not become relegation candidates? To paraphrase Steve Parish. Guehi is a superstar player and generational talent. He is worth superstar money. Unless a club makes a massive bid for him, why on earth should we sell him? He could be the difference between mediocrity and Europe. Shall we improve our bank balance by selling them too? I know that would make you happy and probably send us to the Championship. We will remain a small Premier League club if we continue to sell our best players. You seem to find the good players make you win games theory difficult to grasp. Are you sure you watch football?

We just don't have to sell. Quite a nice position to be in.
