I'm not really sure why one would want to insult anyone unless it was in jest.
Clearly, all White people have to be frightened of saying anything to minorities in case it is misconstrued, so humour is now out.

I once said to my mainly Hindu staff "the problem with this place is too many chiefs and not enough Indians". I apologised immediately but they were laughing their socks off.

However that was about 30 years ago so I am expecting a law suits any day now from the offended.

I regard this as utopian and misguided and incredibly dangerous as it's a misjudgment repeated throughout history.

It reminds me of the how the socialists regarded the Soviets before the full knowledge of communism in Russia became undeniable. The described a system....which essentially was what they wanted....rather than what the reality was.

Thank god the western system was socially conservative at the time, as it saved us from the idealists. The scary thing about the future is that all those people are now dead.

It seems that the young generation have learned all the wrong lessons from history.
They rebrand the same old mistakes and then use all kinds of sophistry to justify them.

Over the last thirty/forty years the concept of 'racism' has become mainstreamed throughout society and organisations.....Well, only western I might add...it's very much ignored in most of the world.

It went from what I'd consider some sensible safeguards to what is essentially the ridiculously subjective. I doubt that this was the original well meaning intent of those who first supported those safeguards.

It uses language like 'inclusion' and 'diversity' to do, what is in practice, the exact opposite.

I'll make the point I've always made on race. On the population scale group preference is as natural a behaviour as the connection you feel towards family members. The idea that this can be lost by frightening people and persecution is as misguided and damaging as the original 'blank slate' idea was in education....it ignores genetics and totally relies on the conceptual....a kind of self denial similar to how it's possible to fool yourself with religion.

Studies show that out of all the 'races' Europeans are the least ethnocentric. I think this is a combination of both genetic and culture factors and the fact that essentially leftist ideology successfully implemented the 'long march' through the institutions and cowardly politicians of the time ignored it.

The current mainstreamed view is that the 'global village' is desirable and can work. In a way I see this situation as just more evidence that it can't....all we are seeing are a lot of frightened people bowing and finding excuses for power transfer.

Whatever the long term at least I can say that I never did that....I will never kneel to those that think human nature is dysfunctional. I see them as the new puritan religious zealotry (which also was well meaning) and similar to the battles of the past it must be opposed.

They have been misled with a pied piper of delusionary language and it's kind of a tragedy that the tragedies of the past have to be repeated.

You hope that the best people rise to the top but unfortunately that doesn't really happen. What you get are elites doing whatever nonsense they think best keeps them in power.

It isn't about what's fair, the reality is who benefits.

Sure dosent make it easy if your an employer with several hundred staff (where some %age is multi cultural) what do you do to safeguard your employees against racially driven torment or indeed to safeguard yourself against a future race driven claim ?

Constant staff education programs ?
Insurance policy?
Hike prices so high to cover the cost of a future claim ?
Phase out the multi cultural ones by natural wastage to reduce the future claim possibility ?

Also - What do you do if you dont have any multi cultural staff at the moment - it dosent really encourage you to leap forward & hire any.

What a nightmare to have to weigh up.

Not being keen on positive discrimination is utopian? Or educating people properly about morals and do unto others etc.?

As I have said several times already. The context is everything.
When the 'abuse' is accepted as friendly banter by all parties, then it is not reasonable to complain about it years later.
I am very suspicious that he is using this to add a race element to treatment that he has received that he considered to be unfair.
Frankly, it amazes me that people who appear intelligent take this stuff on face value.

No one should get bullied at work or anywhere else, but it happens regularly and nothing is done. People who make a fuss are usually considered troublemakers and pushed out because it is easier to get rid of an individual than a larger group. This could well be what happened in this case, but I don't know.

One thing I am quite confident about is that this guy decided to become offended by banter when it suited his agenda.
I would be reluctant to employ or work with a pakistani in the light of this. Why take the risk of being accused of something with plenty gullible enough to believe anything they say?

This explanation is still inexplicably passing off racism as banter.

It's also complete conjecture as to whether it was taken as 'banter' at the time or just taken without complaint after constant repetition. This is exactly how bullying works – first few times the victim tries to push back and gets abused or worse, eventually gives up and just accepts it to fit in and not cause any complaint. Further, I can quite easily understand why someone whose livelihood depends on a harmonious team dynamic would not necessarily raise a complaint immediately. People aren't all confident extroverts like, as weird as it is to write, you might appear to be. And even if it was taken as banter, it's still racist, agenda or not.

I'm also not taking any of this at face value, you appear to have skipped the part of my response where I clearly question his character as that is being reported but unsurprisingly not very widely. He may well be adding fuel to the fire for extra effect but ultimately have all the accusations of racism been denied? Has anyone seriously implicated mustered legal defence? Multiple defamation suits incoming? No and no.

Also bizarrely from someone who hates identity politics so much you're grouping together and negatively labelling all pakistanis as unworthy of employment based on one individual. I mean, really. I think you're a bit muddled.

And your very well construed response exposes another issue (one of time) that is testing many thoughts and issues on the legal front.

I'd probably agree with you in those areas.

But this 'Rafiq' case takes that and runs around the track several times over....and that's the problem when no one says this far and no further...as those people are the ones being called names.

I suppose I'm partly remembering our previous conservations in these areas.

I think in a situation where it clearly isn't accepted and part of the banter between individuals I'd agree.....I'd also agree that it's basic knobbish laddish behaviour. However, let's not forget that these are young men in their twenties who are only there out of very good cricketing abilities.

Where does the truth lie here?....what is a fair reading of the actual reality? I think there has been a rush to side with Rafiq out of puritanism rather than balance.....and if you think of the consequences that creates more problems than it solves.

What this will create is less trust, not more.

But common sense doesn't get people into leadership positions anymore.
