We have two right backs neither of whom would be in the team if we had more money plus a young left back who is still learning his trade and again in a perfect world would probably be backup to someone better. Additionally we do have a long term sicknote that no-one has actually seen play and don't know if he's up to it plus a couple of central defenders who can do a job in an emergency

I post very rarely and realise I'll probably need to put my tin hat on. Is it not that long ago that we had pages and pages on a thread starting by Gareth Thomas pointing to homophobic comments on this site (realistically it was only a couple of individuals) because of the Brighton rivalry. May be I am in the minority but I personally find this cringe worthy. So bl**dy what the about the Hundred and what your sexual orientation is. Sorry this just encourages people to pick up ad hoc comments such as this and give this site an undeserved reputation. I also apologise if I offended you. You are correct about Gareth Thomas, and I believe some posts from here were quoted by him. However I do seem to remember he was asked his view on Brighton fans calling us “pikeys” but he chose not to reply

Let us not forget that after all his outrage he was caught on mic making a homophobic joke the words kettle and pot spring to mind. Anyway this is distracting from why we are not signing Armstrong. I suspect he was a nice to have if the price is right rather than go all in. However I still think we need an out and out striker and a winger.

Just look at how he got Mike Ruddock sacked after the 2005 grand slam. All because Thomas thought he wasn't given enough credit. Sums him up as an attention seeker. Obviously, no excuse for homophobia.

I think fullback is our weakest position this season. Trouble is you don’t want to buy someone and potentially impact on the development of the young fullbacks we do have. Perhaps a left back on loan would have been an idea? I think there is still money to be spent as well…put perhaps not as much as 15-20m.

We have 2 good RBs but neither are spring chickens so we could face the same issues as last season with lengthy injuries, having to bring CBs in as cover etc. At LB, we have 2 serious quality players - but they are spring chickens! Both need more time to reach the quality we crave (one less so). On strikers - get a loan in who can hold the fort for a season while our young players season. After all, the club has hired specialist coaches to do just that.

Missing out on Armstrong is not a bad thing in my view. You take last season out of his stats, and he’s had a pretty average career. He might be entering his prime, or it might have been a fluke. Either way it needs to have been a deal that made sense, and not many strikers can make that step up into the prem. The number quoted for a player in the champ, in the last year of his contract were a little spicy IMO Pick him up for sub 10mil and it’s a gamble worth taking, 15-20mil and it could be an expensive mistake.
