As soon as you use your money for slavery activities, I don't really think how much of it is a factor. There are plenty of people that kicked ass for this country that had no involvement in slavery, we should put up statues of them. Unfortunately, there was a small part of history where we as a nation considered slavery to be a perfectly normal thing to do and that means a lot of legacies are going to be tainted, but that really isn't the publics problem. We will always have this debate. I know a lot of people in their 50s and over that think Jimmy Savilles statue should still be up, some in that age range will still argue the good he did makes him worthy of it, I am definitely not one of those people, 20 years ago or 200 years ago makes no difference. I bet you don't know a lot of people who do. I think you made that up. What happened was wrong....If someone goes and smashes in the windows of the Communist party tomorrow or of any party or property that offends them.....Then I personally would agree with criminal charges being brought against them and for proportional action being taken for the damage caused. However, if they were convicted and punished they will be correct to point to the double standard at display here. How politics can be used as a justification for criminal damage and how the courts have allowed people to be set free for it with no punishment. Edited by Stirlingsays (06 Jan 2022 12.04am)

This post just highlights your lack of any real interest in this story. There were many efforts to give wording to this statue that acknowledged Colston's role in the slave trade, but all failed due to objections from small interest groups, notably the Merchant Venturers Society. Hence nothing ever got done. I'm now glad an artefact like this can be somewhere with the appropriate historical context it so desperately needed - a museum. So people can learn the facts, as you're keen for them to do. Any normal person has better things to do than destroy statues. Just think about how dumb it all is for a second.
The idea that you destroy everything that offends you is only reasonable in the minds of imbeciles or those who wish to manipulate them for wider political or financial reasons.

It is a green light. The colston fours case was that the statue was indecent. They get to pull it down. their decision. That 99% of the population of Bristol never get asked didnt matter. Woke elite broke lock down pulled statue down with not one crime committed bedcause they though a staue was indecdent. Woke law for them.

I am not sure how the jury came to their conclusion; I read somewhere that because the Council had plenty of opportunity to remove the statue but didn't, then it was 'okay' for a group of likeminded people to perform the task for them. So, if that is correct, does that the mean that the public can remove illegal immigrants when the Government fails to do so?
hats off to palace, they were always gonna be louder, and hate to say it but they were impressive ALL bouncing and singing. |

"Woke privilege" expect to hear more of that expression sums it up. If your a football fan and you desecrate a monument you are a thug and should go to jail however if you are doing it because you are on the right side of history you get a free pass.

how about a straight swap... yis can keep yer Oliver Cromwell statue at Westminster provided he is furnished with a matching Gerry Adams Statue ? otherwise delete both statues. Send them to stand at the International War-crimes Commission at the Hague.

Why would Bristol City council remove something if virtually nobody is asking for them to do it? Its a fake story created by left wing self interest groups.

It beggars belief that the so called Colston Four should get away Scot free after causing such wonton damage. They clearly enjoyed doing it and they also enjoyed the adulation they received after getting let off. Just a bunch of so-called woke terrorists. Haven't seen any comments from the Mayor of Bristol, Marvin Rees. Wonder why that is?
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |
