I would say that the crop of players we have is probably the best of the last forty years....but not by much. Ability wise I'd say we were in the top four in Europe. I don't think Southgate has improved the side at all....if anything he reigns it in.

What we are seeing is the result of a favourable draw. I don't think on most nights we beat Italy, Spain or Belgium.

Still, let's hope that we play well and Italy don't.

There are things we agree on - yes, really! - but this is not one of them.

Bang average club manager, but he was borne for this role as figurehead of Team England.

Still, most of the naysayers who filled this thread with silly negativity after Scotland have gone very quiet.

That said, at the risk of hypocrisy, while I always said we would get to the Final, I can't see us getting past Italy.

Slightly off point, after the game there was quite the hubbub at the end of our road. So I hobbled down with my new knee and still in my slippers to see what's what, and there was a spontaneous street party/riot on a zebra crossing opposite Sainsbury's. Lots of fist bumps with drunken strangers. It was great.

Divided opinion about whether he should have saved the free kick.Personally I think there is a case for agreeing with Gary Neville and this was my initial impression even before he expressed his opinion.
Pickford has conceded quite a few goals from distance in the last couple of years.

Pickford looked somewhat uncomfortable all game but he did make a couple of good saves diving low to keep the ball out.His distribution, usually so impressive, let him down.

Lots of errors from Pickford last night but this was not one of them. That he got a finger tip to it was a miracle given how late he saw it. One of the giant Danes was blocking his view. A very good and complete free kick - best of the tournament. No shame in not saving it, but it did rock his confidence. Italy will have seen that.

They will also have seen Maguire lose it. Silly boy. They will be needling him senseless on Sunday to exploit his brittle personality.

I'm not GS's biggest Fan, but can't fault him in this tournament.
Took Grealish off - which I thought was odd, but I kind of understand, though I would have taken off tired legs.

The thing I like about GS is that he plays players That fit his plan - rather than the big names. I still rate the 'golden generation' of Beckham, Gerrard/Lampard et al as a better quality squad(only just) - but the difference here is we're not shoehorning names into the lineup.
Would Sven have played Phillips? not so sure.

I cannot remember our defence being more solid than it is at the moment. The Danes never looked liked scoring in open play - restricted to long shots only, which is fine by me.

The one weak point in this Team is Pickford. He's had a mare of a tournament. Yes he's made a Few good saves, but not one that any keeper worth his salt wouldn't have made. Because of the defence in front of him, he hasn't had much to do. And his distribution - the thing he was he main strength - has been shocking. All Tournament. Last night was his worst by far. Seemed to pick out Danish players(or their fans in the crowd) with unnerving regularity. Once or twice in incredibly dangerous places. We were lucky to get away with that.
Went with the wrong hand for me for the goal, as well hit as it was - it should have been reachable. If he goes with the other hand, he gets more distance and height, and has a better chance at saving it.

Overall, looking forward to Italy. I think I'll be able to enjoy it a lot more than I did that one last night. Italy have been my pick for the tournament from the first game, but we will be competitive, and have the quality to beat them. should be a great game. Bring it on!

I hope the dickhead with the laser pen is thoroughly ashamed of himself and caught and chucked in prison for a bit.
We don't need or want to win by cheating.

There was a break in the game and the referee came over to the side and had a word with a UEFA official.
The gesture that was made led me to conclude that they were discussing the use of a laser pen in the crowd.I really cannot remember if this discussion took place immediately before the penalty was taken or at some other juncture.Perhaps their discussion centred around something completely different.

I had to laugh at the italians, the biggest diving cheats of all time, accusing England of cheating for the pen.

Well, if I'm wrong I'm wrong.....and hopefully we are both wrong on the final with Italy.

I think ability wise we are about fourth or fifth in Europe.....really it's a damning indictment on the Premier league that we aren't first by some margin.

have you watched any of the matches?

I'm staggered that people can't see what Southgate has brought to the team, which no manager has been able to do for decades despite having so-called world class talent at their disposal. And still think it's down to luck/favourable draws. If anything our previous flirtations with success with England have been on the few occasions that we've managed to string together a couple of good performances.

Southgate's influence has produced the most organised and cohesive squad I've probably ever seen in my lifetime, in his relative short time in football management - 200 games he said he'd managed last night.

We have a chance against Italy, and if we win we'll have beaten the best team throughout the tournament, which no one can say is down to luck/favourable draws/in spite of the manager. Well, you could say that but you'd be wrong.

Hear hear!
We have had a favourable route through to the finals ...we've played a Weak Germany Side, Ukraine - the worst team in the last 16 and an impassioned Tough team in the Danes(just look at Italys route for comparison) - but to use that as a criticism is harsh.
As the old Cliche goes; you can only beat what's put in front of you. And this England Squad have not only done that but done that with some style.

Could that be down to the fact that the majority of the players in the EPL are NOT English?

BreakingEngland charged by Uefa

England have been charged by Uefa following a number of incidents during last night's game against Denmark.

One charge related to the use of a laser pen which was flashed in the face of Kasper Schmeichel by a supporter as he prepared to face Harry Kane's penalty.

They have also been charged with "disturbance caused by its supporters during the national anthem" and the lighting of fireworks by its fans.
